Finished off my first Fed ( brown w/ yellow writing and yellow rolls ) box and this is all I came up with - nada! This is from 49 of the 50 rolls. I looked through all the 74Ds and couldn't seem to find any DDOs. No silver, no nothing of any sort! Kinda bummed since I spent about 5-6 hours on this box tallying everything, but I'm optimistic on future searches since I'll be much faster and will start asking for customer wrapped rolls. Does anyone have any tips on being more efficient at searching? Such as the easiest way to open the rolls, and then quickly searching for anything of value. At the moment I just stick a pen under the flap on the side of the roll, strip it back a bit and unroll it at the top and then push out the coins into my hand from the end. I'm mostly interested in NIFC and silver coins, so for pre-64 I could just look at the edge of the coins as I empty the roll into my hand, but I've never seen a year 65-70 yet - do their edges appear solid silver color or are they split with copper? From this thread I got the impression that 65-70s are solid silver on the edge as well, which would make my search very easy. As a beginning CRHer, any tips would be much appreciated, as I plan to do this more in the future! Also, is any of this lot worth keeping other than the 2001P, 2008D? I see on my tally sheet that there are some coins of which I have very few from 75D-88D ( almost all Ps are few since I'm in Utah ) but I don't know if any are worth selling off for a profit. I'm not a set collector so I'd like to take any possible profit from these coins to invest in other coins more of my flavor. Thanks to all those who have posted on this thread! I've read almost all of it and have learned much! I hope to be a contribution as well.

I average 20-30 minutes a roll. Here is what I do. I hit the edge of the roll on the corner of the table, breaking the paper. I then check the edge to see if there is any silver. 90%s are easy to see, sometimes 40%s get missed this way. Then I spread them out on the table and flip them all to the obverse. I then slide the 1971-2001 coins into my other hand and toss them into the reject box and place the keepers to the side. Rinse and repeat. I don't check for DDO because I don't have magnifying equipment, but I will someday. Also keep your ears open, because silver sounds different then clad.

Just finished off my second box.

Not nearly as good as my first

1.1964P
1.1966P
1.1969D

That was it for any Silver:

Other Kennedy's that I saved were all MS Grade:

1- 1974P
1- 1979P ( Also Completely Gold-Toned!)
1- 1986D
1- 1988D
1- 1990D
1- 1991P
1- 1996P
1- 2002D (not intended for general circulation)
1- 2006P (not intended for general circulation)

* 1 1971P- not sure what is on the Obverse- posted pics over in the variety/error forum for some help.*

Hopefully the next box will be better!

i average about 20 seconds per roll, this includes uncrimping the end of the roll, pushing the coins into my free hand, edge checking, then sliding the coins back into the same roll. I'm so awesome at this I should make a youtube video. I also never miss any 40% halves, even the ones with a very pronounced pink copper stripe.

A 1969-D Kennedy half

I was at work and a girl was paid with two half-dollars. I went over to her change cup and picked them out. Low and behold one of them was a %40'er. My first silver kennedy find from circulation.

theeteetotaler:

to the forum!

If its taking you only 20 seconds a roll, are you looking at each coin individually on both the Obverse and Reverse?

If not, you are missing out on possible valuable coins besides just looking for silver content!

DDO's - (1974D), Missing Designer's initials on the Reverse (1982P), Die Rotation Errors, Lamination, Struck Thru etc just to name a few.

Just some friendly advice, please feel free to take it or leave it:

1.Always look at a coin's Obverse & Reverse
2.See #1

Good luck in your searches!

Oops, I meant 20-30 minutes a box.

Last box was hit and miss, I found 2 40%s, but I also got shorted 4 halves.

That's very interesting analysis, snoobies! 78 and 78D pretty tough, along with 82 P&D and the mid-80s. This is what I see also. I almost thought, wow, no 76 at all, but then saw your bicentennial counts at the bottom.

There were no 75 dated coins.

BTW, this is the 999th post to this thread. Next post= 1000!

A new member gets to be #1000 and also my first post!! Reading through this thread got me into the roll hunting mode. Was having trouble finding any rolls and then I got lucky (so I thought) and found a bank that had 25 rolls. Of those 25 rolls, I found ZERO silver. I wound up keeping 1 roll of the hard to find coins identified here in this forum. BTW, one bank-Wachovia- wouldn't let me look because I wasn't a member.

Today got a nice box
1 2003
1 40%
1 90% JFK
1 Walker (1941)

Some banks do require you to have an account to buy coins from them. I think that is not always a good decision on their part. If I am ever traveling and stop at a bank to buy coins, and they tell me they can't sell me them unless I have an account, I will then open an account, buy the coins, and close the account.

I picked up my usual 2 FED boxes of halves today. The first had 1 40% silver and the second had 13 40% silver. I wish I found a few 90% silver coins, but I will take what I can get. It usually takes me 20-30 minutes to go through 1 box. Keep searching!

Are you just checking the edges also? I guess I'll have to study a few 40% next to post-70s before I can start picking out the 40% just by the edge. As far as always checking the obverse/reverse, I've thought about whether to do that or not. You can spend all that extra time examining every coin to find a rare coin here or there, or you can spend all that extra time looking through more rolls just for silver. I guess it depends on what you like to search for, but I'd be hard pressed to comment on which would be more efficient in bringing the most value out of an hour's worth of work. Then again, I'm not very familiar with some of the prices of DDOs or no-FGs so for all I know, if found, their value could far outweigh finding an extra few silver in the same amount of time if you hadn't searched for errors.

I usually start by looking at the edge and pull out any that I see. I then hold the roll verticle and drop each coin about a quarter or half inch onto the one that just dropped. You can easily tell the difference in sound. You always can not tell the difference on sight.

snoobies - In answer to your question, Yes I check the edges. But I also spread the roll out over my hand because sometimes you may miss a 40% by just checking the edges. Although, I have been doing this for about four years now and have become pretty confident in just checking the coin edges. It never hurts to double check though. I never really searched for errors, but I do come across a double die here and there. I'm search mainly for the silver, proofs and rare dates (1987, NIFC).
