JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

The customer bought over 3000 ounces of silver about 12 years ago and brought it all into the pawn shop to sell recently when silver was about $32/ounce. The settled at about $109000 for it. The owner mentioned he would only make about $1500 on the deal when he sold it.

1993-S Facing in Wrapped Role

I got my two boxes from my regular bank this week and the boxes are different. They have different writing on the outside, though the rolls are the same color and style as I have had before.

One roll has a 1993-S showing on an open end. Not sure if it is silver or not, but a nice way to start a box none the less. I was weighing my rolls, and saw the beauty on the bottom layer.

I would upload a picture, but my older Olympus seems to have suffered a bit of damage while at the beach. I will have to see if I can fix it and ul a pic.

I guess 7 boxes is the magic number!

I opened the box and immediately saw the white-ish look of a silver half - turns out it was a 1967. Then some NIFC (1-2008, 1 ea. 2005 P&D) showed up.

As the box went on the following popped out:



1 - 1962 Franklin - haven't found one of these since the early 70's!

1 - 1964 JFK
1 - 1966 JFK
1 - 1967 JFK

The other 67 in the pic is from the 8th box

And one of the 1967s is a DDO that looks identical to the pics in the Cherry Picker's Guide!

I was beginning to wonder if roll hunting in this area was such a good idea. I also learned in that I noted there were quite a few marked halves in these boxes.

I have now accumulated a roll of extra NIFCs from searching:

1. Do people actually but rolls of these things or should I just dump them back into circulation?

2. I know NIFCs are low mintage - but to my way of thinking, since they are bought by collectors they will never be worth anything more than face value... right?

BTW - also got an NIFC 2001 P JFK in the last box. It was badly beat up and even dented so that when laying flat on the table, if I gave it a push on its edge it would spin like a top!

earle, I usually pick the 20 best I find of each yr 2003-2010 P and D once I complete that I throw the rest back 2002 I didnt do never found any "pristine" ones go figure

My weekly box finally broke a long skunk streak. I got it last week so it's been dragging out over two weeks (I've been busy with work). Anyway, it yielded 4x 40%ers (65, 66, and 2x 67s). I wonder if people really skip them thinking they're not silver?! Oh well, I am not mad at that. It, 1989S's been a while since I found silver. I also got a nice 1989S proof and a 1971D that looks like a proof.
