Gorgeous N-5 which is an R.3. As far as grade I will go as afar as EAC 40. This is a solid coin with good color and no damage. I really like this coin.
1816 N-5 R.3 40/40.

Thank you, Celticsoul. One can always rely on you for a well thought-out
and accurate opinion. An I would agree with the EAC EF40 assessment, would just add average+. This coin has nice surfaces and an appealing chocolate colour, specially on the reverse. And I do like chocolate!

Thanks,

Nice information you gave Celtic. I could never understand the r.stuff and the n-stuff. I want to learn though.

Let me see if I can explain the "N stuff and the R stuff" in a nut shell. The N number is the die variety number. N is short for Newcomb. Back in the 1940s a guy named Howard Newcomb listed all the die varieties of large cents from 1816-1857 in a book called "United States Copper Cents 1816-1857". All the dies used in the early mint were hand crafted and are distinctly different from each other. Sometimes the difference is minute. By calling this coin N-5 I'm saying that this is variety 5 for 1816.
As far as the R number, this states the die variety's rarity. R.3 means that the variety is fairly rare, 500-2000 known to exist. Sometimes there are common coins that have rare die varieties. Sometimes common coins can be rare in high grades. A coin might be R.1 (very common) in G-4 but R.5 (very rare) in MS-60.

N or Newcomb numbers are only for large cents dated from 1816 to 1857. Earlier large cents are listed by S or Sheldon numbers. William Sheldon published a book entitled Penny Whimsy listing die varieties of large cents from 1793 to 1814.
