You have to be careful when buying these as I saw someone mentioned the coin book is just to hold the coins, doesn't mean they are all there and people were bidding it way up. I won this lot and from what I see, the coins coincide with the slots in the book. I have returned coins that didn't match the 2x2 descriptions, since they are part of the description. Have you ever gotten coins that didn't match the coin book slots? I am wondering since the lot I won has an 1908-S coin with a hole in it in the 1908-S slot. There is also an 1867 I can't see the date but the others match.

Not sure what we're getting at, here. He said 31 coins, there were 31 coins, the images were plenty large enough to see the 1908-S is holed, and you yourself said you got exactly what he said you would.

Why would this be a caution against buying similar?

I actually just won this lot and hadn't received it. I actually bid on the lot where none of the coins matched the holes in the book, fortunately I was outbid and the final bid was way to high. Guess people thought that all the 1870s were actually there but they were all 1900s. Of course I am wondering if the 1908-S is in fact an "S" but come to think of it, not something to post here if it turns out not to be but I will just wait to see. I think it will turn out fine. I have returned coins though that were marked XF on the 2x2 that were VG details cleaned.

Kind of stinks though for those that bid on that other book and expecting all the 1870s and getting a bunch of common dates. Technically they were as described, since the seller stated it wasn't a complete set, he was just putting the coins in the book for a place to put them. All the coin books I bought with coins in their correct spots so I am not that concerned.

Ah, I get it. Did the buyer leave that in his Feedback?

I never understood why you buy so many low grade coins

But everyone should collect what they like.

I am thinking you are hoping that a 1908 S will make
it worth the purchase, even with the hole.

For me .. I see the hole and think .. isn't that
hole right where the mint mark should be.....

I would be very wary of buying folders of coins even with close up photos showing the date of the matched the album on ebay. You do not get to see both sides of the coin. A Philadelphia mint will fit just as easy into an S or D mint better date will and the seller can word the description such that he has an out if a buyer complains about not getting what he thought he was.

Here is the 1908-s. I see no "S" do you?

Maybe if you draw an S in the folder you will be able to see it through the hole. Wow you just opened my mind to filling all the key date coins in any album!

Yeh, they are going back. The whole reason I bid on the coins was the 1908-S. Even if there was a little bit of an S peaking out from the hole, I would not return them. All other coins coincide with the slots in the book beside this one.

I have had exceptionally good luck with Mercury dimes ... never a misplaced coin in several sets, probably nearing 10 in the past few years. In fact, one set had about 7 slots where 2 and even 3 coins were stuffed into the same hole. That was a set in a Whitman "thumb buster" folder.

That said ... I have seen some indians and early lincoln cents that were in horrid condition on the reverses from poor storage. I don't buy copper coins in one sided albums for that reason.

Yes, I have an Indian Head cent, Barber dime, and Mercury dime book that came with coins. I didn't have any issues and all were as appeared. The only issue was a 1864-L in poor shape in a book that I don't think it is an L but who knows it is hard to tell. Definitely not a good idea to buy Indian cents in a book with a 1908-S or 1909-S in it unless there are separate photos. Come to think of it, the Barber dimes had pics of the reverse and obverse, outside the Whitman book. It is an interesting book and I liked it but as you can see that is not a 1908-S. If you can't tell if the coin is scarce, it is not. Might be a good idea to have separate pics outside the book.

About the only challenge left for coin collectors of classic coins is trying to buy them at a discount rate in the best condition you can find. I guess if I could buy a complete set of uncirculated Franklins for a great price I would do it, but where is the fun in that unless you are then going to sell them for quick flip?

You are wrong here.

Buyer beware.

The description did not mention that you would receive a 1908-S. It said "31 small cents in album 30 Indian Head & 1 flying eagle". That is what you received. The bid prices reflected this.

You can CLEARLY see that the 1908 is holed in the exact spot where the mint mark would appear.

Just Carl said: "Just one more reason I keep away from ebay." I agree, it is motivation to avoid SELLING because of nonsense like this.
