Canadian Coin News - This is the final part of Canadian Coin News' three-part series on Canadian counterfeit coins. As counterfeit coins continue to plague the hobby, some claim the powers that be - including the Royal Canadian Mint, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Ministry of Finance - aren't doing enough to fight back. With no one taking charge and hundreds of counterfeit Canadian coins turning up on online markets every day, collectors - and their valuable, culturally significant investments - are all but forgotten. The last line of defense for collectors of Canadian non-circulating legal tender (NCLT) - or collector coins - is Trenton, Ont.'s Mike Marshall, a well-known counterfeit coin researcher and educator. After a decade of advancing technology and increasing overseas counterfeit production, he said the problem now threatens the investments of all Canadian coin collectors. Read the Entire Article

I feel bad for the guy who gets fooled with the "Maple Leaf" in Mike's left hand. No milkspots anywhere!

Steve: Was that meant to be a snide comment? Because that's the way that I read it and Mike is a friend of mine.

As appreciative as I am of Mr. Marshall's work and much advice from others, I admit to being discouraged when I see the vast numbers of counterfeits and 'replica' coins available.
Coin collecting in this environment is more of a forensic examination than a numismatic treasure hunt.
This said, I'm not completely put off. Counterfeits are not a new concept. It's not like I'm an interweb shopper.
To stumble into a hoard, or even a few coins not seen for an age, is why I do it.
And I bought a metal detector.

Hats off to Mike doing a great job, really like the section in the latest Charlton catalogue hope to see more in the future. What are the markers to look for on the Silver Maples?

What we all need to know is how to detect them. I have a small but growing library on how to detect fake coins, and a reasonably extensive 'black' collection.
Access to the various data bases of fake coins is well worth going into. Access to XRF equipment and a good set of scales also useful, but nothing can beat experience. Nevertheless we all must all start somewhere, and the sooner the better.
This article is short on this subject, unfortunately. Has he any videos on his practical exercises on the detection of fake coins? That would be useful to us all.
