I remember some years ago the late Johnny Countdown was working on accumulating a full roll of five-dollar gold pieces. Since these coins are about the same size as a nickel a full roll would presumably be 40 coins and would fit in a nickel-size coin tube. I don't remember whether Johnny ever completed that roll but I always thought it was a cool idea. With that in mind I've been gradually adding to my "raw" half eagle collection. I'm shooting for coins with no big problems in grades of choice AU or less for which certification won't add much value. I'm up to about 34 coins although I've cheated a bit by throwing in two Sovereigns and a Canadian 5-dollar piece. Otherwise they are all different dates, including some worn low-mintage issues, one each from Carson City and New Orleans, a Classic head, a couple no-motto Liberty coins, and some Indians. Just a few more to go. Makes for a pretty pile!

Do you have a canvas bag for them? That would be way cool. Awesome collection. It has always been a dream of mine to have a hoard like that. That is a beautiful pile.

Just noticed. What is that coin in the top right corner of the stack?

Nice -- I've always liked the Classic head $5 and $2.50 coins, but I don't have very many.
A tube is a nice compact way to store gold coins in a safety deposit box.

Do I see a 'ring in' George V Canadian $5 in there, or is it a sovereign? If a sovereign, what date and mint mark?

That would be incredible to find a roll of these while roll hunting nickels.

What a nice pile of gold! I am doing something similar, but with $1 gold coins instead (more in my price range) in a dime tube. I am not as far along as you are, though!

Very nice .. At 34 your getting close. I too, have thought about doing something like that, but always get distracted. I was thinking a roll of $2.50 gold, have not tried putting them in a dime roll .. have to try that later today. ============================================== Never checked the thickness ... how many do you think will fit into a nickel roll ... 40?

Nice project. In liquidating my dad's modern proofs, the only thing with substantial value was the gold. Commons or rare dates, gold has been one way to go for building an inheritance. I built a stack of common eagles at $200 each over a year in the 90's, then liquidated them to buy a gold watch. Over that short period they didn't do more than hold their value. Had I held them for 20 years they would have tripled.
