Reputable seller on ebay offering two raw specimens from the Mexico mint, separated by 3 years in date. To my eye, the rendition of the king's countenance is rather different from one to the other. Is such a variance a red flag?

Which one? I actually don't like the look of the surfaces of either. Wish we had images of the edges.

IMHO, both coins are being casted and the lustre of both are not good.

HMMM ... looking at he 1786 at the obverse rim edge at K-9 and the I of DEI we see surface peeling and a present underlayer. So you think maybe a $75.00 -up Sheffield CC8R Type 1? But look at the windows of the castles and the real poor workmanship. This appears to be a silver plated copper piece but not of the high workmanship Birmingham types. The edges "hint" to be all messed up. Not a quality Type 1 - IMO. More modern and worthless ... IMO. I have no urge to pull the triger as a period Type 1 Sheffield ... in terms of them being regal ... well ... <BG>.

Good analysis by picking up the different portrait - that is a red flag of course. But did you notice the font style differences? The size of the S in Carolus - the shape of the G in Gratia and the taper of the serif on some of the letters (one letters et uses a taper while the other uses a square tail on the serif).

I tend to see both coins as examples to avoid. The 1786 looks like a cast copy - numismatic forgery and the 1789 looks like a Class 2 coin.
