Saw this at my LCS today, had never seen one before. Don't feel bad if you don't know, there were several old collectors there who had no idea either. Once I found out what it was, I offered to buy one of the three he had but he wouldn't sell one because he wasn't sure what they were worth. Sorry about the images, they were on my cell.

Looks like a coin roll holder, maybe from a vending machine?

I am going to assume that this item is coin related, so I will guess it is a holder for nickels, for use in parking meters from many moons ago.

John1 From these guesses, I'm starting to have second thoughts about what he told me. lol. I'll wait a while longer to see if anyone gets it before I post what he said.

A case for holding 2.50 worth of dimes.

I was hoping someone would corroborate what he told me so I don't look foolish if this is totally wrong but a few of the guesses were very close. He said this was an original mint roll for silver 5 cents pieces pre-1921. When he bought the three, they were filled with 50 - 1902 5 cents pieces. If you look at the second picture, there is a lighter area on the holder which he said was for a mint sticker or tape.

That's very interesting! Given the tiny size of those old "fish scales" and the fact that the word "disposable" was probably unheard of in that era, that explanation of the metal mint roll in your pic makes perfect sense to me. I'd guess, in general, banks sent them back so the mint could reuse them.

Oops - forgot all about fishscales - that's why dimes came to mind

Very cool piece. I don't blame you for wanting to purchase one of them from him. Did your dealer say that the fish scales were issued from the RCM in these containers? If so they haven't been used since 1920. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah wireman09, that's what he said. I saw him yesterday and told him I was still interested. He said that if I could find a reliable source for a price, we could work out a deal for one of them. I can't even find another picture of one of these things.
