I bought six Liberty Standing quarters in mostly fine condition for about 48 bucks today. If I could complete a collection of LSQ's in fine condition I would be happy since a few of them get expensive. About half of them can be bought well below $100 in Fine condition or VF condition. The other ones before 1921 and a few oddballs will cost you more. I sometimes think that if a person just bought the most rare and valuable coins from any set it would be a better investment that collecting all the coins in a set. However, I like filling up the holes in my collection so I will blunder forth. For sure it makes sense to just fill the silver Washington quarters and Silver Roosevelt dimes and stop there I think. However, my wife like the Kennedy halves so I tell her to collect what she loves.

I think the SLQ design is great. I'd like to work on a set BUT the hole that would remain (1916) would annoy the heck out of me.

Ahhh, that hole. I am 3 coins away from completing a SLQ set. The 1916 is a tough ticket to punch, and the 1918-S 8/7 is even harder. I have walked away from the SLQ for a while because I even bid on a them a couple of times only to have my hopes dashed. To me though, this is the best looking US coin made. I like the obverse of the Type 1 better than a $20 St. Gaudens. The reverse is a nice contrast with the open fields. It is the SLQ that got me collecting, I found several in a bag of junk silver Washington quarters. Even heavily worn they are a cool coin.

Love the Standing Liberty quarter. Love a lot of the series from that era. Mercury dimes, Peace dollars, Standing Liberty Halves. Kind of just fits my description of an attractive design with the realistic soaring eagle and the shielded and draped liberty. However, completing set's isn't really my thing and earlier sets really can be a buzzkill with some coins being worth thousands of dollars. That 1916 in Fine condition would cost more than the down-payment I just put on my house. I'd rather just spend a lot of money on just one common date MS or AU SLQ and put it in a type-set.

I work on completing the set and will buy the 1916 SLQ when I get a good opportunity. This is why I usually buy one set at a time. If I start buy multiple sets I know I will never finish them because all the sets have a few coins that are bank account busters. Those bank busters do stand the best chance of appreciation, probably. The coin dealer I do most of my business with does not even have a 1916 at any price, but I see on ebay they exist at high, high prices. I got the Liberty Walkers and the Peace dollars sets complete and almost complete Franklin except for one coin. It will take me some time to fill the SLQ, but I will get there as long as I can save some money each month.

Nice to see such determination. The set-completion fixation can ony be exorcised by going through the experience at least once. After that, as you note, you will come to settle on buying the rarest coins. I wish I had followed this path 40 years ago.

I've always wondered why the Mint makes it so difficult to complete a set. I've got several sets of those Quarters and naturally the 16 is missing. So far I've never even seen one at a coin show.

There is a local "We buy gold" shop that has a good amount of coins in cases. It's a tiny hole in the wall, but this guy has a PCGS slabbed (I forget the grade) 1916 just sitting in a case surrounded by a bunch of other random coins. He wants a pretty penny for it!

Is it the price or the fact that the 1916 LSQ is just not available? If you get one in good condition I see the price as $2500. Now VG is twice that much and EF is 15,000 bucks.

A $10 1916 Philly mint Barber fills that hole nicely.
