Can this eek out a G-4? Any comments welcome. I liked it for the cheap price I paid.

As you know I am not good at grading but here it goes, obverse looks like it would make g4 but the reverse looks g3. The rim has a lot of nicks on that takes away the eye appeal,IMHO.

Thanks for you opinion John1. I agree. The rims leave a lot to be desired. If it can manage a G-4 grade, it will be the obverse that carries it. I will say, as usual with these, in hand it is a more attractive coin. The pics are emphasizing its "issues".

I think the coins definitely has the details of at least a G4, and possibly two or 3 points higher. It has some problems so that will bring it down a bit. But the details are certainly at least those of a G4.

Agree with the consensus that it will probably grade out as G details but that obverse, & date in particular are, almost VG when you consider that the grading services tend to be quite lenient on 18th century coppers.

Love the coin, Second hair style, right?

Reverse looks sort of pitted, like old environmental damage, buy maybe that's just the lighting. Obverse close to VG, agreed.

Obverse could be VG. I'd say G6 details.

Although this coin is a little beat up it's a very cool piece. The 1798 Hair Style 1 coins are difficult to find these days.
This is an example of Sheldon variety S-159 which is an R.3 (scarce). The big gap between the 1 and the first zero of the fraction is one diagnostic.
That said his coin has problems. The corrosion on the reverse is rather heavy and the rim seems pretty rough.
I'm willing to give this coin a G-4 sharpness grade but I will have to net grade it down to AG-3 for the issues.
1798 S-159 R.3 4/3-

Thanks again for the comments. I have an eye on several early coppers (1794, 1795, 1796, 1798, 1801, and an 1805) that a friend dealer is giving me first crack at. I have seen them and if the prices are reasonable, I will probably buy them all if they are offered. I hope to be posting them soon.

I agree with G-4 to G-6 details on this coin. Impulse buy for $65 bucks.
