*Warning- this is a very long post with lots of pictures*

About 6 months ago I thought that it would be a good idea to get some World War II era coins from each of the major countries involved. I got 3 coins from each of the following nations...
USA
Great Britain
Russia (which was the USSR during the war)
France
Canada
Australia
Germany
Italy
Japan

I really enjoyed putting this set together because of the historical significance, and they exposed me to coins of different countries (which isn't easy for me because I focus on U.S. coins. While I was assembling this set I discovered that I really liked Italian coins.) This set was very inexpensive. I think I put mine together for less than $50. If you have a family member who served in the war, or if you want to learn about the war, I would highly recommend doing this set.

Now for the pics...

USA

- 1943 steel cent. The steel composition was only used in 1943 to conserve copper for the war effort

- 1943 War Nickel. Nickels were made out of silver from 1942-1945 to conserve nickel. 35% silver.

1945 Cent. Cents made in 1944-1946 were made out of copper that came from salvaged artillery shells.

Russia/USSR- this is where most of my money went. The Soviets produced some very odd denominations.

1940 1 Kopek. This coin is VERY small. It is about the size of a US silver 3 cent piece.

1945 5 cents. The reverse of this coin has a series of dots and dashes around the edge of the coin. It is Morse code and it spells out a message of victory. Unfortunately I do not read Morse code and I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what the message says.

Germany

1937-A 2 Reichsmark. Whenever I show someone this coin they always think that the person on the coin is Hitler. It is actually Paul Von Hindenburg and he was the one who put Hitler in power. Hitler did not appear on any coins officially issued by the Third Reich. This coin is also silver.

1938-A 2 Reichspffing. Nazi coins with the "A" mintmark were made at the mint in Berlin. Please note that the white mark on the obverse is on the 2X2 and not on the coin.

I just received some Vichey France coins from my first numista trade yesterday.

The Victory nickel says "We Win When We Work Willingly". We had to have the denomination on our 5 cent piece so the 'V" is the Roam numeral for 5 as well as being short hand for "Victory".

Beethoven's Symphony #5 was played on the BBC radio as an introduction to it's shows during WW2 because the opening (ding ding ding diiiing) works out to be Morse for V.

Do all the coins have a special differences caused due to WW2? I am collecting coins that where changed for WW2 reasons (Concurred, shortage of metals etc.) and some of those coins seem to be standard issue.

I was passively doing a minicollection of coins from WWII myself. However, I included Belgium coins in my mini collection (I have 3/6 and still need 5/10/25 centime coins).
