*Warning- this is a very long post with lots of pictures*
About 6 months ago I thought that it would be a good idea to get some World War II era coins from each of the major countries involved. I got 3 coins from each of the following nations...
USA
Great Britain
Russia (which was the USSR during the war)
France
Canada
Australia
Germany
Italy
Japan
I really enjoyed putting this set together because of the historical significance, and they exposed me to coins of different countries (which isn't easy for me because I focus on U.S. coins. While I was assembling this set I discovered that I really liked Italian coins.) This set was very inexpensive. I think I put mine together for less than $50. If you have a family member who served in the war, or if you want to learn about the war, I would highly recommend doing this set.
Now for the pics...
USA- 1943 steel cent. The steel composition was only used in 1943 to conserve copper for the war effort

- 1943
War Nickel. Nickels were made out of silver from 1942-1945 to conserve nickel. 35% silver.

1945 Cent. Cents made in 1944-1946 were made out of copper that came from salvaged artillery shells.

Great Britain all of the British coins I used were donated to me by a fellow CCF member.
1942 Farthing

1943 Half Penny

1944 Penny

Russia/USSR- this is where most of my money went. The Soviets produced some very odd denominations.
1940 1 Kopek. This coin is VERY small. It is about the size of a US silver 3 cent piece.

1940 10 Kopek

1940 15 Kopek

France1941 50 Centimes

1942 1 Franc. This coin and the next coin were made by Vichy France which is a government that the Germans put in place in 1942. You can read more about Vichy France here...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vichy_France

1944 2 Francs. This coin is also from Vichy France

Canada 1939 Ten Cents. Silver

1942 1 cent

1945 5 cents. The reverse of this coin has a series of dots and dashes around the edge of the coin. It is Morse code and it spells out a message of victory. Unfortunately I do not read Morse code and I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what the message says.

Australia1942 six Pence. Silver

1942 Penny

1943 3 Pence. Silver

Germany1937-A 2 Reichsmark. Whenever I show someone this coin they always think that the person on the coin is Hitler. It is actually Paul Von Hindenburg and he was the one who put Hitler in power. Hitler did not appear on any coins officially issued by the Third Reich. This coin is also silver.

1938-A 2 Reichspffing. Nazi coins with the "A" mintmark were made at the mint in Berlin. Please note that the white mark on the obverse is on the 2X2 and not on the coin.

1942-A 10 Reichspffing

Italy1940-R 2 Lire. I think that the "R" mintmark means that this coin was minted in Rome.

1941-R 10 Centesimi

1941-R 50 Centesimi

Japan1940 1 sen

1942 1 Sen.

1942 5 Sen

I hope that you enjoyed seeing my new coins. Questions and comments are appreciated.
