It doesn't take long at all since you're entering it into a simple form. Here's the instruction page https://transcription.si.edu/instru...-numismaticsIf you want to try transcribing a note, I recommend a Series 1902 $5. The reason being there is only one portrait to deal with. -MV

Okay -- I did ONE. It took me 48 minutes. That includes about 15 minutes to read and reread the instruction, 5 minutes to wander over to the kitchen and get some chocolate candy, and 15 minutes (no kidding) trying to figure out how to get a decent view of the note, 5 minutes asking for and getting my husband to show me how to use the touch pad on my laptop so I could get a decent view of the note, and then about 8 minutes to actually enter the required information. I think the rest will go a lot faster. Done for now - but I'll do some more later on this evening.

way to go Buddy. Yes, once you get the hang of transcribing you develop a rhythm. Note to everyone: Remember Series 1902 comes with two different Secured by clauses "only bonds" or "with bonds or other securities" -MV

Yeah, I'm sure the next one will be a lot easier. I feel really silly about not being able to enlarge and move around on the image. I kept the instructions open in a separate window and went back and forth. Mostly I was worried about reading the signatures but they provide a list so that was easy. Off to do another one right now!

I did a few more.
I couldn't find a series on one set. It made me wonder if there is any communication available on that site. For instance, would someone who reviewed my work be able to let me know where to find that series? Or if I made a mistake?
It's kind of fun being part of this. Plus I'm sure I'm absorbing some info. about the notes.

Buddy there is a "Notes on Transcribing this page" box at the bottom-- if I see another transcriber has asked a question or made a comment, I try to answer it. Not all the proofs have an engraved Series of date especially the earlier notes. The Series of date, Charter #, and serial numbers were overprinted. Here's an example: 252078301933The other thing earlier notes often lack is a BEP Certification Date.

Thanks. The note in the link looks just like the one I did -- different bank, though.
I was telling my husband about this and he asked how I even heard of the project. So I said from the CCF site. But I wonder now -- how did you hear about it?

In 2014, I read a Coin World article saying they were looking for volunteers to help. Earlier this year Westcoin posted a video showing the scanner the Smithsonian used to capture the images https://goccf.com/t/227743I found the transcription site, signed up and waited for the projects to be loaded. -MV

Thank you for your answer. As soon as I read it I remembered seeing something on the news about it, although not bank notes. I just remember seeing someone feeding old pages into this high-speed machine. I found it scary because I remember the old Xerox machines and how they got jammed -- even though those were the copied sheets. Automatic feeding of sheets to be copied came along much later.
I'm glad you posted here about it. I don't think I would have ever known about it and it's fun to help.

Transcribing has now moved into New York with the posting of Boxes 1 and 2.
There are plenty of proofs for everyone to have a chance. I keep posting when there are boxes so CCF members have a chance to get in on the fun.

When I go to the link it say: 100% complete.
Really? Or are they on some kind of 'winter break'? That would make sense if it's all being done by volunteers inside and outside of the museum.

I've interpret the 100% complete message as "there aren't any boxes currently posted for transcription" since I haven't seen proofs for Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc.

Thanks -- it was hard to imagine it was all over.
I don't often get the chance to go pitch in and work on the project but I kind of missed it when I went there.
I'll just keep checking whenever I get the chance.
