He says he thinks it is a 1916, so I doubt he looked for any die markers. So he is prettymuch guessing.

Quote: A must have for a true collector. Since it has not been certified I am willing to let it go way below its value. My loss is your gain. Ha! What we have here is no doubt a 1917 that appears to have been grinded down so thin (possibly by the seller himself!) that even the most telltale diagnostics are indecipherable (diagnostic photo aide has graciously been provided by the seller); Scam! (I guess he needs some money to get that carpet cleaned) I did send an offer for $3, which is more than that coin is worth.

Yuck. 1917 T1. Doesn't match the characteristics of a dateless 1916.
Going to offer $3.50 :P

Yup 1917. Funny how he has a picture of the die marker comparisson of dateless 1917s and 1916s and his coin shows every single marker for the 1917.

The incuse wall design definitely pinpoints this as a 1917 SLQ. The excuse wall design of the 1916 would have LONG gone with this wear.
I agree, this coin has been intentionally altered to hide most of the 1917 characteristics.

To be fair, the seller might just be excited and fooling himself. Sometimes it's easy to see things you want to see. "Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest".
They do even include the diagnostics image that I've seen shared around this forum a few times to show that the coin is actually a '17! You can tell by the hair and the drapery by the feet.
I think this might be priced a little high even if it was a 1916. But the seller is accepting offers, so... I think $3 is about right.

Since this coin is "a must for a true collector," none of us must be true collectors.
"My loss is your gain": anytime you hear that phrase, run away as quickly as possible!
