I am in a cynical mood today, so I am very suspicious. If true, at lest they have a lead.

A $10K collection yet no $100 Walmart safe to at least invest to keep them in.

Hmmmm, he didn't know the number of coins, or there value and throws out a guess of 10 Grand, my guess this person is not wrapped to tight.. And the best place to hide something is in plain site, a Safe is the 1st thing someone would steal (IMO).

The whole thing sounds very fishy.
Strange woman staying in house & "victim" not knowing what something valuable is worth. What's up with that?

IMHO, I'd not be too quick to prejudge any victim. All too often, the perpetrators are known to the victims, be they "friends" or family members. This victim was apparently not, himself, a collector. Even the best collectors/dealers can let their guard down and fall prey to crime. Doubtless, the blame is squarely on the thief. Remember the case of infamous Dr. Sheldon?

While we're on the topic of safes, I'd like to point out the better safes to buy are professionally crafted and capable of being wall mounted or bolted to the ground. It's all too easy to think a small safe will protect everything, but it's also all too easy for a burglar to just take the safe entirely and open it at their leisure.
A good, professional, boltable or mountable safe with a high rating for fire protection and man power will cost money, but can be a great asset protector.

Quote: IMHO, I'd not be too quick to prejudge any victim. I am not judging the victim. As the story was written, I am very suspicious since it invokes more questions than answers. This could be the fault of the author or simply what it is (a breaking story with few details). I definitely require more evidence before I pass any judgment against the victim or perpetrator.

This is in my "neck of the woods", Lockport has million dollar homes and some not so nice ones less than a mile away. Not to mention Niagara Falls is very close and the US side is basically a cesspool with a ton of crime and drug problems. There is definitely multi thousand dollar collections in the area and bringing home a wrong person I could see it stolen. The one local radio station used to just read the niagara falls police blotter to show the stupidity of the area.

Quote: And the best place to hide something is in plain site, a Safe is the 1st thing someone would steal (IMO). Very true but after I got a 900lb safe my views have changed somewhat. However, I still keep the ridiculously expensive stuff at the bank SDB though, just in case and would NEVER leave someone at my in plain site house that wasn't trusted with 100% confidence but even then... I agree with jbuck on the fish smell with the info provided on this story
