So, Many people keep pre-1960 nickels, any Ike they find, NIFC coins etc. I curiously am keeping a roll of each clad Kennedy half with a mintage under 20 million, and at some point I decided to keep 1976 & 1971 Roosevelt dimes because they had mintages under 200 million. Now I figure the NIFC halves will be something nice, Maybe the under 20 million halves will be harder to find one day So I have a jump on the crowd of circulated coin collectors. But are there even 20 million people out of the estimated 321,557,317 US population collecting coins? What about the world? Is there really any reason for me to bother keeping the 1969 or 1971 dimes? What are some of your guilty pleasures to keep that aren't common collector pieces? I am really addicted to bicentennials. I love Independence Hall on the half, but I just love halves cause they are big coins, but quarters... Maybe it is because I grew up watching Rankin/Bass Christmas specials and even though it is a colonial drummer it just connects to that age when I saw the Little Drummer Boy TV special. Could even be what spurred the design artist to have his son dressed as a drummer for the 1973 contest.

Well I fall in the "album filler" collector so once I have a coin I'm good. Most albums are in some stage of completion with average circulated coins and very low grade key's but I have always been on a budget and not bought many "nice" coins until I started my 7070..but my son is 27 and isn't as interested in these old coins in albums. He likes "bright shiny new modern" stuff so every year since 1992 I have a proof set and have most mint sets. He also likes gold but we don't have much of that. I did buy the new high relief 1 oz. gold coin when it came out last month. I would have never bought it for "my" stuff but knew it would be right up his alley. So my "guilty pleasure" was buying a coin he would like instead of investing in a nice coin or two for my type set collection.

Like Debrajc, I am an album filler. I have never shied away from cracking an OGP holder to fill a hole. However, as the cost of filling the remaining holes has increased, I have had to satisfy my coin needs in other ways. With that said, my guilty pleasure is buying US Mint products that are not cracked for albums and with the advent of the C&C sets I cannot stop until I have all of then.

I have 2 large buckets that are full of just about every copper cent I have found in the past 7-8 years. I know that they won't be worth the trouble to sell, but every copper I get still goes into the bucket.
At one point, I wanted to build a BU set of LMCs and post-1960 nickels from circulation. I kept every high grade example so that I could go back and cherry pick through them--still have not found time to sit down and actually do it, so I have rolls upon rolls of BU cents and nickels from the 80s-10s.
Wait, was this a thread to show off, or a Modern US Collectors Anonymous meeting?

Quote: a Modern US Collectors Anonymous meeting? No, no. The "curb your hoarding" thread is over in the Main Coin Forum near the bottom of the page. You won't find support here trying to tell you to get rid of anything. I was just curious and thought others might be to ponder the things we hoard that aren't common things everyone would hoard. I know someone that won't ever have the state or ATB Quarters because they don't think they should exist so refuse to collect them. That just made me think, what other strange things do we keep that aren't on the normal list like silver, wheats, etc from circulation. I just hope your bucket is well away from water and moisture and the floor can support its weight.

Like many here, I save any NIFC coin, copper cent, nickels pre-60 and any Ike or SBA. I also save any Bicentennial quarter, 2009 coin, "S" minted coin and foreign coin I come across in change or from roll hunting. Of course I would save any silver coin (duh!) and occasionally I will buy halves from a cashier or service desk on the odd chance I might find something worth keeping. I also keep and label the 2x2 the first coin of any denomination I find in change with the current year. Usually it is a cent, but occasionally it will be a dime or quarter. One year about a decade ago the first circulation coin I found was actually Canadian, I got a Canadian cent in change before I found any of that year's coin from the US. Being that I was in Chicagoland at the time I thought that was pretty cool!

Any US coin Not that I use any for purchases, but apparently I can at some shops (and markets). Or I could always sell some for currency value.

I Used to hoard all business strike Lincoln S mints, 1968-S TO 1974-S that I found in circulation. but I stopped after a bunch of years realizing they were not in demand. I did the same thing with Jefferson nickels ( no mint mark) 1965 to 1967. also gave that up.

I am "guilty" of saving any Canadian nickel or cupronickel quarters, dimes, and nickels. Here in Canada, all coins predating the plated steel coins are being melted, so I want to "rescue" them from the melting pot. I have also started assembling nickel rolls from 2013 and later - one per year - although they are circulated. I'm just hoping that it's worth something someday.

I have about $250 in 59-82 copper cents. About $50 in wheats. I did have a pretty good collection of halves going from searching but parred those back, having fun spending the NIFC shiny looking halves all over. I have a couple of quarts of 2009, about a quart each of 1959 and 1960 cents, a quart of S cents, and about a quart of 59-82 red cents. I have a roll each of the first 4 Presidential dollars that came out. I don't keep any nickels/dimes/quarters, gotta limit myself somehow, except for the 90% that is..

I don't hoard circulating coins, but I do have a fascination with the coin shown in my avatar. I have 4 slabbed, 2 in other type holders, and many more loose

I'm saving pre-82 coppers again, along with any silver and any Gem BU newer coins I find in circulation. If I find a 2009 coin I'll personally save it as well.

I save the coins in my pocket each evening, jug them, and bank it after a few years (it's a big jug). The last two times have added over $2000 to the bank account.

I save all spare change and put into a gallon jack daniels jug. Once full it equals about $200.
Other than that I save all Ike's I can find, which isn't often.

I HATE keeping "worthless" circulating coins in my collection. I'm only a neat freak when it comes to Numismatics, and everything has to be organized. That being said, the only modern coins I keep are Ikes, SBAs, NIFC coins, bi-centennial coins, and any S mint LMC 1968-1974.
