I noticed this occuring on 2 dollar coins so far - maybe the mint tried to overuse the dies for them and this is what happened? And it's not for one year but for three different years so far:

1998
Two-Dollars-Coins-With-Cud

1999
Two-Dollars-Coins-With-Cud

2005
Two-Dollars-Coins-With-Cud

Note, a Cud is formed when parts of the die start to break apart, leaving extra major flow of metal that you can see on the rim.

I'm just about finished sorting & putting all my $2 rim Cud's into 2x2's. When I've finished I'll do up a list & post it here, should be done today or tomorrow.

$1 seem to have the most rim Cuds. I haven't done a list of them yet, but will eventually.

I have a heap more $2 with incomplete Rim Cuds (I can't think of any other way to explain them), where there's been a collar clash & the rim has been raised & then folded over making a 'Rim Cud' that's not the full width of the rim & with tapering ends.

1999 was a bad year for these, there's so many I've stopped keeping them.

Peter,

http://www.coincommunity.org/galler...hp?album=377

The above post has some pictures of the $1 rim Cuds to be found. IMHO the rim Cuds are predominantly on the Reverse. They are occassionally found on the obverse.

They can also be found on the 5 cent coin, again predominantly on the reverse.

While I have not searched as many 20 cent coins as others, I have only ever found one rim Cud on a 20 cent platypus (again reverse). There is a form of rim Cud on the coming home 20 cent.

I have not found rim Cuds on any other denomination.

I will get around to posting more pictures eventually.

I've got rim Cuds on all denominations except 50¢. I saw 1 picture of a 50¢ with a rim Cud, can't remember where though, probably ebay.

I find they're fairly uncommon on the 20¢, 10¢ & 5¢, don't have any great numbers, I just know I've got at least one of each. I'll track them down & list them some time soon.

I've started getting a list of $1 ones together, so I'll tackle the lower denoms after that.

I was wondering, is there a significant value priced on a Cud?

Depends entirely on how common it is, how many collectors want tnem, all the usual things. Although I do collect them, I don't buy them as I do pretty well finding them.

Do a 'Rim Cud' search on ebay, that should give you a rough idea.

If I saw another 50¢ rim Cud for sale, I might be tempted to buy it, just to have one, but I probably wouldn't go higher than $7 incl postage for it & even then it would have to be in pretty good nick.

I agree with Nancy. They are certainly collectable, but I wouldn't bother buying one. I got a $1 2001 IYOV double rim Cud today. I must admit that it was the only rim Cud in $1000, and that they are are becoming a little scarcer, but they are still around and all you need to do is a little noodling.

I got 2 more $2 Rim Cuds today. I'll add them to the list in my 1st post about them. Might as well keep the list up to date.

This is interesting - I just took a look at Yass' examples and I'm quite puzzled. It seems the Cuds are predominately on the left - any reason why? I was expecting a reasonable 50-50% on both left and right but most of the examples so far are on the left. Nancyc seems to have a better distribution of the Cuds.

I was thinking exactly the same thing this weekend. I have lots of rim Cuds, but I don't recall any real Cuds on the right hand side of a coin.

Perhaps its the way I look for errors. On the $1 coins, I generally start at the smallest roos ear and work my way around anti-clockwise. I'm pretty sure I'd pick up a right hand Cud, but I'll be a little more careful. I'll ask some colleagues if they've got any.

Pulled a 2007 2 dollar coin with a rim Cud today - also at the bottom left of the Elizabeth side.
