I'm wondering what's the trend on this coin... Has it been becoming scarcer nowadays? I can't seem to find any...

I've only pulled one while I stayed here for 5 years. I've almost completed the 50 cent commemorative set and I'm just missing the Centenary of Federation - QLD 50 cents. I've only managed to pull my second Captain Cook 50 cents just a few days ago. That said, the mintage of the Merino Ram is actually quite low - at a mere 4.7million compared to tens of millions if not close to 20 million+ on other coins other than the Federation coin set.

The 1991 50¢ Ram's Head coin is very difficult to find in circulation. These are the approx numbers of low mintage commems I find. 1991 Rams Head 4.7m - 1 x p/2yrs, 1970 Capt Cook 17m - 3 x p/yr, 1981 Charles & Di 20m - 5 p/yr, 2000 Royal Visit 5.1m - 3 p/yr, 1988 Bi-cent 9m - 2 p/yr 2004 Koala 10.2m - 2 p/mth justa..I'll see how many 1991 Rams Head I've got, you might be lucky gx, I'll send you a Qld COF 50¢. I've got heaps of those.

From the mintages a ram's head should be easier to find than a normal 1973 or 1997 50¢ but I find about 3 to 4 times as many of these. It looks like a lot of ram's heads have been taken from circulation; either by collectors or people who just like the design (or remember the old shillings).
Similar story, I suspect, with 2001 Bradman 20¢. I know a lot of cricketers like to grab those.

I actually do have the 1973 50 cents but have trouble finding the 1972 50 cents. I think what is more challenging is the 1985 and 1993 50 cents which are just at a mere mintage of a million each. I actually pulled these two from circulation: (pulled the nice Bicenntinal 50 cents from circulation just a week ago I think) Both in decent aUNC condition. I've finally pulled a rather decent Royal Visit coin as well Most of the commemorative coins that I have found are in at least XF to UNC condition. The only set that I found it tough to find in XF+ condition is the Federation set and that is one of the toughest set to find. Nancyc, I think I would like to request for the QLD 50 cents - I'm getting a bit tired to see so much holes in my collection.

I'm finding a lot of royal visit.... Guess what? I went through my friends collection of 50 cents.... He had over 1200 dollars worth of it... I went through it and came up with 43 rare/scarce 50 cents... one 1993, one 1985, few 1994 wideys, 5 or so royal visit, a lot of COF and no Ram's head... they are really scarce...

I love the Ram's head coins and clearly many others do as well because they are very hard to find. I managed to get one searching on Friday last week though. I seem to be able to find the Tall Ship's coin relatively easily in comparison (about 12:1 ratio). I find twice as many 1985 50c coins than the Ram's head.

gx..the Qld 50¢ is on it's way, with a little surprise as well. justa.. You did get lucky & your 1991 Rams Head is on the way as well, plus a surprise. Jeff..Well, your 5 coins are also on the way, but sorry, no surprises for you this time. I couldn't see anywhere that you are after 'other' circulating Aussie coins. Maybe next time.

Thanks Nancy, Not to worry -I wasn't expecting anything more. Of course, if you wanted to surprise me you could have stuck in a 1966 'wavy' 20¢ -just kidding. You coins were posted yesterday. thanks again Jeff

Quote by Jeff "Of course, if you wanted to surprise me you could have stuck in a 1966 'wavy' 20¢ -just kidding." Now that's one coin I would love to find. I do have one but it was a 2006 Chrissy present together with a 2000 $1/10¢ mule.

Nancy, I have been very lucky and found two 'wavys' in last year. But, I don't have a 2000 $1 mule (maybe one day). Jeff

I manage to find another Ram's head night night when I searched through $200 worth of 50c pieces. From the $200 I kept 1973 (5 kept), Tasmania COF (1), NSW COF (1), Royal Visit (1) and the Ram's Head (1). Not many really.
I also did some 20c piece and I found a 1966 20c but it is hard to tell if it's a wavy 2. Put it this way, it's not as clear cut as some of the others I have found if it is! I might have to put some pictures of the wavy's up and some that aren't to try and confirm if it is or not.
