I just got back to the office from my bank. I bought $100.00 worth of halves ! Who all thinks I have a chance on finding ANYTHING WORTHWHILE ! Haven't ever done much "roll hunting" before, but I want me some silver for even money ! What key years (other than pre 64) should I be looking for ? Any other advice on things to look for ? Keep any 1964-1969, and also anything post 2000 in good condition, nothing from 2000 forward was released for circulation. Also any S mint is worth keeping in good condition.

64-69 are "clad" I believe....okay. "S" mint.......didn't think about that one. I have 8 rolls packaged by the U.S. Mint uncirculated 2002 rolls. (i think... might be 2003 I forgot) Is there a chance to find some Franklin half dollars ? Are there "key dates" or "semi-key dates" that I should be looking for ?

If customer-wrapped, every $100 in halves yields at least one 40% silver (65-69). 90% silver is harder to find and probably not in $100- need to do several hundred to get a 90%. Chances of Franklin or Walker are very low but if you do enough, you'll eventually find them. I've gotten a few over the years. I'm about to do my first bank-wrapped rolls (coming next week and I can hardly wait). Also keep 87 P, 87D, 70D (rare, because only in mint sets). Also keep 2001P (not released for circulation), but toss 2001D back into circulation. See the JFK analysis thread ( https://goccf.com/t/22710) for other possible dates to think about keeping, especially if in higher grade.

this is awesome information !! I have a nice handfull of Walkers and Franklins in 2x2's and Franklins in Proof and uncirc. sets, but just didn't really know the odds of finding any of those types in my TEN $10.00 rolls (bank wrapped I believe) And the info on those dates....... That's awesome ! I hope to get lucky and can't wait to get home to search em' !! Hoooooeeeee ! I'll give a report on my findings on Monday ....... Next Friday maybe I'll try $300.00 and see what happens. And yeah I'll take it back to my other bank so I don't re-search the same ones over and over !

Normally when I go thru $1000 in halves I have found about 35-45 silver coins per batch. Best of luck!

When roll searching you must remember location, location, location. If your in a larg city area almost all coins have been gone through numerous times. I buy several rolls of halves each week and haven't found anything worth keeping for many, many years. I've asked at my one bank where they know me and they were telling me that most of their change goes to the Federal Reserve and then redistributed around the city. This means the chances of me finding the same coins over and over are pretty good in this area.

GO - You find 35-45 coins per $1000?!?! OMG - If I find 10 in two boxes then its a great day! my average is about 5 per box!
I find a good amount of proofs. I'm trying to put together a set of proofs that I've pulled from ciruclation.

May last time getting 6 rolls of half dollar in Nov 07 I found 1-20ct of 1967 & 1971 10-P 10-D and the other 4 were a mix of dates that were in very worn condition from 1971-1976 they were Mississippi slot mach rejects !

I pick up a roll of halves once a month or so. Got lucky yesterday - found a 1967 and also upgrade a couple of coins in my "circulated" Kennedy collection.
There's actually been some misinformation in this thread.
1964 and 1964D - 90% silver (JACKPOT) 1970-D - Never released to public - only in mint sets 1987 and 1987-D - Never Released to public - only in mint sets 2002 and on - Never Released to public - only in mint sets.
Trivia - The 2006-D is the lowest minted Kennedy EVER! There are FEWER 2006-D Kennedy's than even the famous 1970-D. Get them while you can!!

I've only searched through "half" of the $100.00 and no silver so far or key dates. BUT I HAVE $10.00 WORTH OF BICENTENNIAL 1976 HALVES ! I know they're not rare or worth much unless uncirculated, but should I bother saving these ? Does anyone else save the bicentennials ?

Honestly don't bother saying the bicentennials unless they are really pristine. It's one of those coins everyone saved because they "were gonna be worth something" someday.

Do a search on ebay for Bicentennial half lots and see if anyone is getting above face value for a mixed lot. If so, sell them on ebay. I did check a long time ago on Bicentennial quarters and found they were selling for 2x face value, but never checked halves. If they aren't selling mucc more than face, just spend them or take them back to the bank (different branch).

AHHHH, now that is a sore subject. Way, way back when those stupid things came out a freind and myself went nuts hoarding the Bicenntenial Quarters and Halves. My friend ended up with virtually thousands of dollars worth of the quarters. I had several hundred dollars worth of them. Not quite so many halves. Almost all in Uncirc condition. Then after well over 30 years we both attempted to sell them and sell them anywhere. At several coin shows we both were both sort of laughed at. One dealer said he'd pay $0.24 each for the quarters. Most just said NO THANKS. We both ended up taking to a bank and depositing them. Could have made more investing in Buggy Whips.
