Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone can determine if this coin is geniune. I'm pretty sure its geniune. I bought it from a reputable shop in phoenix called coin gallery You can see their website here: External link removed ,,please review the forum rules on posting outside links by new members ,,MetalmanI then called and asked if it was counterfeit if I could return it. They told me there was no need to return it because they were sure it was geniune, and told me to save myself a trip and not go by there for them to check it out. I asked what it takes to work there since I wanted to work there and they said it takes good grading and good Counterfeit Detection skills. I can't imagine a shop like this knowingly selling a counterfeit. Someone told me to check the edge for well defined letters. The same person who told me this looked at one of the edges and told me it looks OK. Also, to my knowledge not many angels were counterfeited. I'd appreciate any help in determining this. Thank you ! Question is what made you think it's a counterfeit. Do post the obverse and reverse as well. Edges are just one part of the story. Welcome to coincommunity.

you buy it from online or in the actual shop? chances are very strong it's real. They bought that coin in from someone so ya know they checked everything themselves for authenticity. and the last thing a local coin shop wants to do is pawn off a known counterfeit to someone else. yes please post some obv and rev pics ple ASE

NOTE: I took the photo here under a light in my house, so the enviorment is pretty dark. Also, the obverse is a bit blurry. Sorry about that. I can take better photos in the sunlight outside tommorrow. Thanks again for the help!Darn it, if I could just figure out how to quote people. Yes I bought it from a local coin shop. It seems like a reputable place with people who know their stuff. I don't know if ive ever actually seen a counterfeit gold coin in hand, but I do study them. I have PCGS Guide to Counterfeit Detection and also Bill Fivaz's books on gold counterfeits. I looked at the coin under magnification for tooling and depressions but I couldn't find any. But then again I'm not an expert on authentication. But I still have no reason to believe its counterfeit. Someone just told me to look at the edge and I noticed on some of the letters on the edge looked worn. So that's why it got my suspicioun. Also some of the stars were cut off on the coin. You can see it in the images. I don't think its anything to worry about though. Image: ANGELOBVERSE.jpg95.01 KB Image: ANGELREVERSE.jpg59.71 KB Here's a picture I took at in sunlight. It is not double struck that is just a blurry picture. I'll take some more tommorrow. Image: New20FRANCS.jpg57.6 KB

Inasmuch as I can tell from pictures on a website (and I usually can), I'd say that's genuine.

Thanks halfabustisbetter!
Now if I could just figure out how to quote people! Heh
Does the edge look OK? Is it normal for some of the letters to appear worn on the edge? That was my only main concern. Also some of stars are off. But someone else told me that happened on some bust coinage as well so that isn't a problem.

To quote a post or portion of a post ,,select reply to topic from the tool bar above the dialogue box click on copy and paste the text you wish to quote between the quote brackets and post as usual . We discourage the quoting of entire posts ,or threads just quote the part that is pertinent to your point .

That is a relatively common gold coin. If you are still annoyed whether if it's a fake or not, first buy a gram scale accurate to at least 0.1g, better if you can find 0.01g. Chances are, if it fits to specification, it's genuine. There is almost little reason why counterfeiters would counterfeit something that is relatively common and try their best to match all specification, from dimension to weight content.

gxseries, thank you for your reply. I'm not really that worried anymore, but my friend has a 0.1 g scale I can use his when he gets back from vacation.
I'll try it anyway.
Thanks again!

Stinky, didn't you get enough advice on the NGC forum that it was real? And I do believe it is real as well. I never answered the question you asked about the edge. The edge lettering on coins often takes quite a beating even on Unc coins so weak or rounded lettering that looks worn is not unusual.
