Are there any 9/11 commemorative coins remembering the tragedy? If so I would think they would be silver dollar coins. Thanks for any information. "Never Forget"

i have seen silver Eagles, and some foreign silver coins, in TPG slabs denoting "ground zero recovery". Apparently the coins were in vaults below the WTC site and were eventually recovered, slabbed and sold. I do not know who marketed them. I'm sure they show up on ebay now and then. Not really commemorative coins, but really a recovery item that was made into a collectible. The mint recently released the 2015 coin and currency set that has a 2015 West Point minted enhanced uncirculated Mohawk iron worker dollar coin along with a dollar bill that begins with the serial number 911xxxxx. I guess you could sorta call it a 911 commemorative as those iron workers helped build (and rebuild) the WTC. I think it's still a very sensitive issue and they are trying to be very careful about how they remember it with coins.

No matter what they do if they do make a 911 coin it would offend someone. If I were to make one, it would show the 2 standing towers and say "Never Forget" across the bottom. Thanks for the information. God bless everyone!

1943 steel cents and the silver 'war-nickels' are the best commemorative coins I know of.

There are a handful of tacky "legal tender" commemoratives from places such as the Marshall Islands - but these tiny nations have essentially sold their names to private minting companies, which really muddies the definition of "coin".

Aside ftom trinket coins and medals. Yes there are coins out there supposedly made from gold & silver recovered from the vaults that were under the towers and melted down but if you want the real deal for sure I suggest getting a coin like mine. They were given back to the owners after the vaults were excavated and slabbed by pcgs as WTC recovery. I absolutely cherish this coin and plan on growing my WTC recovery collection in the future. When you hold one in your hands its kinda hard to explain but you feel it

I saw coins marketed as being made from metals that were from Ground Zero--meaning they took metal from the actual ruins, melted it down, and made coins out of it. That's a pretty horrid way to make a buck.
I worked for a day at Ground Zero several months later, giving aid to cops, firefighters and EMTs. At the recovery site, the most important finds were heads and hands, as they were the easiest way to identify remains. To think that some people were scavenging about, grabbing metal for eventual profit makes me shudder. I find it akin to grave robbing.

Those ground zero coins are "cool" (in a historical way). I'm going to ad one of those to my "To Buy" list!

Quote: cascade, is that gold eagle #1 of 150 made? There were 48,047 2001 bullion half eagles minted in 2001. As to the 1 of 150 marketing designation I am banking on the vault that is was recovered from only had 150 2001 dated gold 1/2 eagles in it.

Quote: cascade, is that gold eagle #1 of 150 made? No it was just one of a group of 150 that was submitted. When they sold out they submitted another group, and then another and so on. Just a marketing gimmick. Another part of the "scam" was that every piece says 1 of 150, or whatever number they submitted, and people will sometimes try to sell them as the #1 coin.

Conder201, like ALWAYS, is correct. These coins were in the COMEX vaults under tower 7 when 1 & 2 fell. They were then given back to their owners who sent them to collectors universe in batches. So this coin was sent in with 150 $10 gold eagles and 150 ASE's and the owner got 1 of 150 put on all 300 coins. Conder is again correct on some dealers and resellers then proping them up as the first of 150 but I knew this and the auctioneer did not when I bought it so the price wasn't hyperinflated for me but yes, be carefull and research these out if ypu want to buy one!
