Is one's collection complete if you don't have the varieties? I know its a personal preference. How does this apply to you? For example, do you need that small date or different composition varieties to consider your collection complete?
Or maybe there is a coin that is way out of your reach and you will most likely never have it... Edited by TheForce 09/18/2015 2:42 pm

As you said, personal preference. It depends on what you think "complete" is. John1

I collect by album so I try to fill it best I can. Sometimes I will get a variety not shown in the album. Sometimes the album will show a rare variety. For example, I have one album with a variety costing $10,000. All my coins don't add up to that, nevermind one coin so I may slip a different variety or different grade of another year into that spot. Sometimes there are varieties I could afford but they are not of interest to me and I would rather put that $100 into a better quality regular issue coin.

Ah, the "variety" rabbit hole. Most would agree that the 1909-S VDB is necessary to a LWC set. Slightly fewer agree that the 1922 plain is. Fewer still agree that the 1955 DDO is. Then there's the 1970-S small date The 1998-2000 WAMThe 1992 CAM All 100 flavors of 2009 LP-2 DDRAnd then the ones that are so obscure that I can't even list them off the top of my head. Personally, I am content to let the white rabbit go on his way and keep my feet (and wallet) out of that particular wonderland.

I agree with John--it all depends on what interests you. I've found some interest in varieties in some sets and not in others. We all have our own likes.

Also there are the 7 varieties of the 1982 Lincoln cents... then there is the 1978 Canada half dollar of square jewels and round jewels. But yeah I agree pretty much with what has been said here.

My collection's complete when I say it is, not what someone else or a coin guide says.

This has come up a lot. And if your like me and collect by Albums, then you are at the mercy of the manufacturers. And although you wouldn't think so, most of them do have similar requirements for a completed set. For example the Lincoln Cents. Most have that slot for the 22 Plain. Many have slots for 55, 72 and 95 Doubled Dies. And of course what Album would miss out on having all the 60's, 70's, 2009's, etc. I'm only amazed that they don't use the coppercoins web site and make their Albums with places for every error coin in every series. Many just use plugs for those. Can't blame them at all. Sure would be nice to get hold of the CEO's of all the Album manufacturers, sit down with them and explain how stupid they are. I know this wouldn't help at all though. But wouldn't it be fun to say something like "You can't have that TV set without buying this sofa" Yes we just make a complete set with what ever we have and want.

That is what is so great about this hobby: Collect what you like and what you want and don't collect anything else.
It's like freedom and liberty -- you are free to collect anything!

Normally I collect a variety if it does not require a microscope to see the DDO / DDR etc., and also if that specific type has been found on coins made to be circulated (like the DDO and "no FG" Kennedy halves I found while roll searching). But most varieties get my interest when I have the "oh no... I have them all and wish there was more of this type to hunt for" syndrome.

Most of my collection looks like something a racoon might drag home, but for the serious 1%, I need coins made from each of the dies used to make that denomination, in that year, at that mint. I am now working on early die states as well as late die states. And constantly upgrading condition. My family is considering an intervention.

Typically I want the varieties that Dansco says I need. Which has me wanting the 1922 plain cent. With that in mind, I have created some custom Dansco albums (using blank pages) so I can collect what I want. For example, I have a single blank SBA Dollar page (16 holes) with the 15 coins (and one medal) that I want. No rim or mint mark varieties in my set.

Quote: Thanks to Matttheriley, I have just recently added the 1914D and 1931S Lincolns, so that is one set which is complete. Excellent!
