I see different stands in some of your setups and wonder what people are using. List your pros and cons and maybe where you purchased it from. I see a lot of these have plastic parts which I think wouldn't be the best. I've heard Ray makes one out of a microscope stand but not for sure so I hope he chimes in.

If you rember ray I bought the camera, bellows and lens from you, but my work went crazy busy. I just need a stand and hopefully this winter when things slow down a tad I can try n take some pics.

Here's a DIY "copy stand" built up from parts: Many of the large parts were taken from a dismantled barn door tracker and other astrophotography items (I gave up astroimaging due to advancing age). An Olympus bellows and 80mm Olympus bellows lens are attached in this image, but other bellows or microscope tube lenses can be easily substituted. At the bottom is a focusing block and rotating stage from a Zeiss WL microscope. Note the two Jansjo lights hanging down from above. These shine on the opalux diffuser to illuminate the coin. When shooting, the diffuser us usually closer to the coin. There are also other diffuser setups with this copy stand. Pros -- it works, and is very modular and flexible. For example, you can even attach a bellows (no attached camera) plus a microscope objective tube with camera, one above the other (so as to examine the areal image from the bellows lens with the microscope objective). Cons -- Unless you have unused parts laying around, it will be large, heavy, and expensive.

I'm not a pro with respect to photography. So my standards are a bit lower (sort of the ol' "good enough for Gov't work" quality). Hence this setup works well for me:

I'm back from a long summer of camping, I have the 3rd one in Ray's pics built by Ray and still learning how to use it the right way. It does work great, but I do not have anything else to compare to.

I've got Ray's version #1 using the aforementioned microscope stand. It's a great affordable set-up. @pepactonius, that DIY copy stand looks really Steampunk!

Hi kanga can you give me a source for yours? Hi dave does that setup work for Morgans? Looks like you can fine tune your focus. Hi mcshilling do you do Morgans with this setup? Looks like a large distance between lens and coin would be good for getting your lighting in there. I'm a total newby to all this and want to do this right the first time. Mostly Morgans is what I will be taking photos of and would want to do VAM work also. I have a Canon Rebel xs and a Rodenstock Apo-Rodagon D lens with a bellows. Still need to get Mark Goodmans book.

Yes, it works with Morgans but you will need a 75mm enlarging lens minimum (not sure what your lens is)

Yes it works with all coins, but you do have to change lens and add or subtract extensions.

This I feel is overkill.I was afraid of the copy stand not being sturdy and the camera not being level with the base. I can raise or lower the camera easily to let the coin fill the field of view and of course manually focus with the lens.
