I want to put together a seemingly impossible set of coins. Seeing some of these pedigree collections selling for 6+ figures is inspiring me to create my own. I have been thinking what set could fit this challenge and two seem to jump out. Either high MS FB Mercury dime or a high MS FH SLQ collection. Am I missing anything else?

Good luck!

A complete US type set in VF or above will always bring a lot of attention. However, this includes some VERY rare coins (small eagle draped bust half, 1796 no stars quarter eagle, etc.)

Well one that hasn't been mentioned yet is a complete set of Barber dimes in MS ...
This would be a good challenge considering there's 74 coins and quit a few low mintage coins ..
I've been working on a set in AU for sometime now , excluding some of the key coins that I've settled / can only afford in lower grades ..

I would love to see a date set of Morgan's of MS65 DMPL. The 1894 and 1895 would have to be in a higher grade (only 3 coins) of MS66 DMPL or MS64 DMPL as there are no MS65 DMPL for 1895 or 1894. This set would be incredible hard to complete if one had the money.

I think a set of PL/DMPL Morgans would be awesome, even if they're not all DMPL's or MS65, say no worse than MS62PL. Should be theoretically possible to complete. Will still require a hundred thousand bucks to do so. I'm not sure how you would handle the 1921 situation.

If you want to collect coins where it is totally impossible to complete a set,
study and collect ancient coins.

I completed a highly valuable series collection of Australian coins many years ago.

This left me without a challenge.

So I adopted a completely new philosophy and approach to collecting.

Hence the reason to go into ancient coins.
Each coin can be a collection and study in itself, but at the same time, can sit in a collection of others of it's ilk, to tell a progressive story.

As a bonus, I have learned a great deal about various ancient cultures, economics and history.
And you have the hardware in your hands to make it all come alive!

All stellas were proofs, no business strikes were produced. Although some are in circulated grades, these are in fact circulated proofs.

there are no MS65 DMPL for 1895 or 1894

Buy a MS-66 DMPL and run a paperclip over it a few times.

Ha, ha any collection of gold coins or early classic coins all in MS condition should be doable if you don't mind getting a second mortage on your house and getting into Meth business like "Breaking Bad". I am just collecting SLQ's and it is driving me nuts. If you commit to such an undertaking it is going to cost you lots of time and money.

Ya but look what Sunnywood did. Everybody told him that paying the stupid premiums he did for his A+ toners was insanity. Then he sold it for over a million bucks and made a very tidy profit.
This is the new and true "game of kings" in today's hobby of numismatics

How about a Mercury dime Dansco with all coins, minus 1916-D, 1921 and 1921-D, in problem-free AU or better? I've been working on mine for 5 years and have not added a single coin to it since the last Winter FUN show. Just can't find any....
