(My fiance has this coin collection from her deceased husbands collection, that she wants to sell.)

There are at least (200) NNC slabbed US coins (AU58 to MS69)
dating from early 1800's to modern. (All denominations)
Plus about (1000) other "raw" coins in "flips" and thousands of US coins in plastic roll holders.

Some of the coins are just beautiful coins with no marks, wear, etc. and could bring in thousands if they were accurately graded.

I have been doing a lot of research on what the major TPG grading criteria is, comparing images, etc. and I feel strongly that most of the coins are "contenders" for being sent in to be evaluated by a top-tier TPG.

Should we remove the coins from the NNC slabs before sending in to the TPG?
If yes, remove, how is the best way to remove the coin?

Which TPG would you suggest?

I am having fun doing all this research in this new hobby (for me.)

Another question, should I get a premium membership to PCGS or NGC to send the coins into them for grading? Or should I drop them off at a local Coin Dealer and have them send them in?

PCGS or NGC would be best for grading (in that order). ANACS a good third. I believe you need membership for PCGS and NGC, so submitting them via a dealer would be your best option unless you want to purchase membership from the grading company so you can send them in directly.

And, yes, remove them from the NNC slabs (my opinion), but be prepared to have your NNC graded MS-69 come back as VF-20 or damaged and un-gradable. The coins in many basement slabs may look "new" and "perfect" but they rarely ever are.

As to removing them, stand it on it's side and gently hit the corners with a hammer...that's how I've heard it done, usually with a towel thrown into the mix. However, removing them when you don't know what you're doing is dangerous and you can damage the coins doing it...so if you do feel that the coins are accurately graded and don't want the risk, send it in for proper grading in the NNC slab...the professional graders will remove the coin.

And remember, threads are useless without PICS!

Should I post photos here of the US coins, or in the "US Classic Coins" sub-forum?
Rest in Peace

Before you invest in having the coins graded I would seriously suggest that you pick out at least one of the best, post a photo on in the "grading" section, and get some opinions.

You could be in for a costly and time consuming disappointment if you just sent them in to be graded. I hope not. But it's a lot easier to take a photo and post a pic than to send a coin to a TPG and best of all, it's free here.

You can always send the coins in later. But if the coins have been cleaned -- you'd be paying a lot to learn that.

Good luck with the collection. I hope you've got some gems in there!

Go with ANACS for coins up to $500, and go to NGC for the rest. If you join the ANA (it's really cheap) you can get a submission number free for NGC so you can submit directly to them.

Please be very careful as you start out.

You must understand the general scope of your collection before spending hundreds or even thousands on grading fees.

If you have one or two local coin shops in your area, I would start by asking them for a general appraisal - most will give you a quick opinion without charge. or a small charge if there are many items.

NNC is not a well-regarded TPG. Do not get your hopes up too high about their opinions.

Take your time, and start by showing us some of your better items.

Also... Anyone notice they changed the name of this forum to include ICG and ANACS?

I might not throw good money after bad. You can sell/auction them on ebay just like they are in the NNC slabs. If you take decent pics of the coins, the buyers will most likely buy the coin and not the slab anyway.

Membership in the American Numismatic Association allows you to submit your coins directly to the TPG (no dealer middleman). Also, if you're new to the hobby, you'll get a wealth of information from the ANA's monthly magazine, the Numismatist, that comes with your membership. Jack

I am reluctant to sell on ebay because of the fees and PAYPAL costs.

I do not know your level of numismatic knowledge but where are you located?

I am sure if you are close enough to a knowledgeable member of the forum they would be more than willing and enthusiast to see what you gave and offer you advice based on an in hand examination of what you have.

I hear you, but even with the fees, it's still probably the best place to sell. If someone knows a better place please let me know.

I agree with Ed that ebay is probably the best place to sell to get the most value for the collection, but selling on ebay is work with the coin posting, packaging, and shipping. If you do sell the NNC slab coins on ebay, they need to be treated as a raw coin and you can not post the grade in the title.

Another option on coins with a value over $200 each is Great Collection auction. GC will send the raw coins to PCGS at a discount for grading, then, sell the coin in an online auction. GC or any other reputable coin auction house will not sell the coins in the NNC slabs.

Post individual photos of your 10 most valuable coins in the CCF "Grading Forum" and the CCF members will give a fair grading evaluation of your coins to determine if the coins are worth sending in for grading.
