I'm back with a question about another Indian Head cent. It has a beautiful red, purple and gold color, especially when held at an angle to the light, but I'm concerned that it doesn't have luster. I suspect it has been recolored, although I can't see any obvious cleaning marks on it. I have a 14 day return privilege so I thought I'd ask CCF members what they think about it. As I said, I think it's been cleaned, somehow, and recolored. Paul Bulgerin

I've seen a decent amount of MS Indian cents and most have a "richer" look than this. You do see the 1959-1864 cents close to this shade, but not this type. I'm hesitant, as it might just be the lighting in the picture, but I'm leaning to cleaned.

I agree, if there's no luster probably cleaned.

I love the details and sharpness of this IHC. but it's 100% questionable color. What a shame.

Thanks, everyone. I'm going to send it back.
It's good to know that I'm getting better at spotting cleaned and/or recolored coins.

Yep, just about to say that Verm. Harshly cleaned indeed.

The coin looks way too clean not to have any luster. Could be a problem getting PCGS to grade it. The fields look very nice but as a cleaned coin, it is about half the value of a coin that has not been messed with.

Actually so much depends on how much? If cheap enough, I'd buy that one but again, only if cheap enough.

I am not sure it has been harshly cleaned. Those striations could be from an improperly mixed planchet. I see these often enough. The difference is if the striations go all the way to the raised devises on the coin. If they do then they are a natural part of the coin. If there is a gap between the end of the striations and the devises then I would say it was probably whizzed. I'm seeing some luster in this coin, but the color does seem off. Though, not as much as most that I have seen.
