Major die clash on the reverse jumps out at you from this PCGS-graded 1885-O Morgan $1 in its original rattler holder.

How do you think PCGS graded her?

I am working on a VAM, it appears to be an O/O variety - thin line visible within the O to the left side - but I cannot find a plate coin with this significant clashing. (Any Ideas, Mr. Dave?)

I'll guess MS-63. The cheek looks clean enough for a 64 but there appears to be many marks in the field in front of the face which I think may have brought its grade down a bit.

I think it could make MS-63.

I'll offer a 62 because of the quantity of nicks on both sides. I like the fresh color though!

Too many marks on the face and distracting field scuffs for MS-63 IMO, especially if you consider that grading standards were supposedly more strict 20 years ago. There is a big nick at the base of Liberty's neck and another smaller mark on the eagle's breast as well. I see strike weakness on the eagle's left (facing) leg and over Liberty's ear, pretty typical for New Orleans Morgans. Nothing wrong with the luster however.

I'd think MS-61 or even the dreaded MS-60 might be appropriate.
Rest in Peace

MS63 for me as well. 1885-O ended a string of many interesting VAMs from the New Orleans mint. There are zero listed clashes with letter transfer so I'm guessing your Morgan has none as well. Your Morgan does however have a normal date position with the mint mark set slightly to the left of normal making VAMs 2 and 12 possibilities so you'll need to compare minor pups to identify yours.

Got this in hand today, direct lighting on seller's part was the culprit; coin is an easy MS64. PCGS said...(still using seller pic until I take my own.)

1885-O-Morgan-Dollar,-PCGS-Rattler,-Clashed-Dies.-Grade-It!

Reverse is 65-66, obverse is 63+ or 64, net 64, IMO. I'll have to take pictures.

BTW -- Dave -- She is a VAM-5, quite possibly a new die state with clash ; the reverse and obverse are both clashed (obverse is clashed at back of phrygian cap across from S8-S9); no obvious letter transfer noted at neck or in hair across from hair V.

Date is far (left of right edge of 3rd denticle from tip of bust) and slanted (5 higher than 1 relative to rim); mint mark has the correct flaking die chip on the surface of the left side of the "O" mark.

Reverse has a fine die crack or clash mark starting in wreath across from NI, continuing clockwise through the right wing and ending at ST; heavy die polishing lines in and around bow; die chip between 2nd and 3rd arrow shafts where attached to the arrowheads. That die chip and bow polishing are both on the V5 plate coin; but plate coin has no die cracks and no clash.

Reverse on this coin is extremely lustrous/cartwheeling but not mirrored enough to be even SPL; reverse fields only slightly grainy; perhaps a MDS VAM-5 with clash is how to describe it, not quite sure, say a VAM-5A if such a thing were to exist.
