Poll Question
Following an interesting discussion in another thread, we thought this would make an interesting question for the members of this forum.
The main themes of the discussion were how do you prefer to interact with the general coin collecting community and whether their is a different method for genders. It would be nice If I could do age as well, but I don't think the poll will easily support that much complexity.
Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated

Excellent idea! It would be interesting to see if results change over time as well.

I would say that my age class (early twenties) and lower may like to use the online since we were basically raised on computers and just looking at prices they are generally cheaper online. I may be wrong but just a thought.

I get the feeling that most YN's and young adults prefer the internet.

There is a certain convenience to the internet...
I would imagine the trend is towards internet with youth (older people perhaps preferring the old ways) and a slant towards face to face with females (given that women are generally more sociable creatures than men - a generalization perhaps but a well documented one)
Of course for some the later option (physical interaction) is just not an option... and due to the infrequency of such dealings I almost feel embarrassed by them. I am not unsociable, and I have had many dealings on the other side of the counter (as a jeweller) but the collecting of coins and banknotes almost feels like a dirty secret to me. I would say that on the rare occasion there is a fair or show near me (and I have only been to 1 banknote and 1 coin fair in the last ten years) I have found everyone to be perfectly reasonable and a couple of people very helpful and knowledgeable indeed... interaction between people rather than with stores/ebay is always far more enlightening and memorable than simply purchasing without any interaction.

This old timer has had a computer since the days of dos, dial up and Radio Shack Tandy computers. So online shopping has been a part of my life for a great while now and have no issues buying online from trusted sources but I do like to attend coin shows and make some purchases I can see in hand when they are close enough to attend.
Speaking of purchasing, I would love to do some with the CCF BUT it would be nice for the sellers to clean up the listings. As has been mentioned it is not the job of the mods. So sellers please, if an item isn't available report the post and get rid of it so we trollers can see what is available please and thank you.

Some of my friends refer to me as the "Rogue" collector.

I think where we live has a lot more to do with it than just our computer comfort level.
If you don't have a local coin shop or a local coin club or there aren't any shows nearby -- what are your other choices?
I'm very lucky -- there are many local coin clubs and many local coin shops where I live. I don't go to them all but there are all available. There are usually 2 or 3 shows a month nearby as well.

Yes well put. Contrary to popular belief, the advancement of technology did not occur overnight. It arrived in bits of pieces over decades - as will continue - and it's an unfair perception some people have that older people are uncomfortable with online activity - albeit we probably do not rush out to buy the latest version of iPhones. Those who choose to have nothing to do with computers are not able to read what's written on this forum.

Interesting, I have found that while you can get a good deal on the internet if you spend some time scouring, or catch the right auction on ebay, most of the time you will pay high retail. I have gotten much better prices, especially after continued business, at my local coin shop. I also don't know where I would go on the internet to have someone find me an MS brown 1931-s Wheat cent. That is what I got from my LCS, and I was able to hold it in my hand and decide if it was the one I wanted before buying it. Obviously, not everyone has a coin shop nearby, and mine is 20 minutes from my work, but 50 minutes from my house. I still make the drive once a week to see what they have for me!

99% online.
I would LOVE to go to brick and mortar shops but the only one that is close by is closed on my normal days off. plus the inventory of my interests (tokens) is non-existent. There is another one close by but after being treated poorly on several visits I refuse to buy from them, even online.
Next closest shop is an hour+ away.
Coin shows disappearing in the area as well (Vancouver area)

RE: Old timers I've been on the net since "time share" connections. There was no 'point and click' technology, no mouse, no color monitors. I remember when ebay was a new company and you could look through ALL the listings in a few hours. That did not last long.

Primarily online here and I'm approaching old-timer status myself.

I'm primarily online also. I love coin shows and go now and then, but rarely buy. For me, with coin shows, I might have to choose between just a few examples. Online, I can see dozens of examples and compare all the prices at the same time. Coin shows give me a better feeling of security and in some cases I also like to be able to see it under magnifying glass in real life...but for the most part, the selection and price comparison and ease is what makes online the winner for me. But I do a lot of my shopping online anyway, not just coins.

I too started of on time share computer in the 79-80's(midi computer). My first personal computer was a 8086 IBM compatible with a 9 pin printer and ran on dos(very slow). The Internet was not ready for another 10 to 15 years at its early stages. Started buying coins at local coin shops in the early 80's and came Tele trade in the late 80's and early 90's for coins. I started to play on the Net because of online poker (Poker star and Paradise poker) in 2002. Did not buy coins on the Net until 2005 or 06 ( HA.com and ebay). I shop mainly HA.com for coins and ebay for books, supplies, Bullions and other quick deals. Coin shop once or twice a month, just to see anything interesting is in the shops. Have only been to two coin show and have not bought a thing. I have made few trades and buys on the different forums with some good results.
