I have an Indian head collection housed in a deluxe Whitman see through
folder. Like many I lacked the holy grail 1877 and 1909-s. Recently I was able to find both and am like a little kid. My question to you experienced collectors is, both are in a plastic case and graded by PCI. The 1908-s is VG08 and the 1877 is GD04. Would I be doing something crazy by removing them from the plastic case and placing them in my book to complete the collection? I was thinking of placing the grade tags in the books back page. My feeling is what good did it do to buy them if I can't show them? Please help with this decision. Who is really going to care besides me? After I am gone someone will regrade them if they are serious collectors. Thanks! Bob

First of all, welcome to CCF Bob!

to your point, generally leaving "key dates" in their plastic cocoons is probably a good idea. Being that your coins are in PCI plastic I'd lean towards removing them like you say, keeping tags and placing the coins in your Whitman.

Nothing beats the look of a complete set in an album.

Do you have any pictures?
Rest in Peace

I often confront myself with a similar question. if I buy a slabbed 09-s vdb would I crack it out so I can complete my 1909-1940 Whitman album ? or would I leave it intact in graded slab ?
I would want to crack it out to show off my finished album.

Yes, and congrats on obtaining these last two coins for your set!

Yes, I cracked my AG3 1916 Mercury dime and my G04 1877 Indian Head cent for my albums.

Without any hesitation

Since PCI is not generally considered a top ranked Third Party Grader ( TPG) it is less of a concern to remove a coin from one of their holders.

If the coins you mention were in NGC or PCGS slabs, I wouldn't recommend you remove them as someone would likely want assurance of authenticity and/or grade for key coins and those two TPG's give that assurance much more readily than does PCI.

Being PCI holders, I wouldn't hesitate to crack them and save the tags.

Welcome!
I left my in the slabs, but my father cracked many of his Morgan's & later regretted it. If you leave them out out of the book sets, be certain to note their location, so if something were to happen to you, the coins can be located. Or you can buy culls to put in the holes?

Bust them out. Free them and let them play with their friends.

As moxking said, if they were in NGC or PCGS I would leave them. Maybe even Anacs. I don't know anything about PCI but I assume they are a lesser known group. The reason I would leave NGC/PCGS/ANACS in the slab is because it should prove they are authentic and not cleaned. You could always get creative and print out a picture of the coin and tape it to cardboard the size of the album coin hole and place it in the album. Then you could keep the coins in slabs while also still having those holes filled in the album! My vote is to leave them!

I bought a 1923-S LSQ in EF condition in a slab with a grade for $1300. I am not going to crack it out. For the more common and cheaper coins if they come in slabs I do crack them out, but not the expensive ones. When I get my 1916 LSQ it will be in a graded slab and that is where it will stay. I have cracked out all my Morgans, but if I spend $5000 on one it would remain in the slab. If you buy a rare coin online only buy the ones that are slabbed and graded. I have a Peace dollar set that is in a Dansco holder and the do look good but none of them sell for more than $500.

Just kidding. Terry8835 is absolutely correct, but in this particular case, just crack these low-grade PCI keys and enjoy handling them!
