While this auction has ended, the pics are still up. This fake was so deceptive it was slabbed by NGC (who has been notified and the certification has been pulled). The folks at EAC have found at least 3 of these so far in various states of artificial wear. Coin is made from transfer dies of an S-158. The Y in LIBERTY is the easiest way to tell that it isn't a real one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1798-Draped...047675.l2557 Edited by EFLargeCents 12/02/2015 07:45 am

What happens now? I wonder if buyer and seller are both notified by someone?

It's taken care of Pete. NGC guarantee kicks in in this instance.

That's interesting. I guess that process would start when and if the buyer notices that the certification number is not valid.

Never even trust a slabbed coin until you have done your homework.

The pinkish/red undertone is suspicious. Look also at her eye. This is getting ridiculous.

Now they're tricking NGC? This is a bit worrying.

Truly bad news if the fakes are getting into genuine NCG holders ... holy cow. Worried about the future for any newer collector! David

Wow, Any idea how long these have been out there? I've got a 1798 at ANACS right now and it has the same general wear pattern as that coin. I honestly didn't look at it too closely before sending it. But the gentleman I traded with had the coin in his collection for at least 25 years.

I would assume these are fairly recent, or they would have been noticed by now. A lot of study goes into these coins and the differences are quite noticeable from a real one once you break it down.

That is an incredibly good copy, save of course for the 'Y' as EFLargeCents pointed out. I am frankly amazed anybody would consider spending that amount of money without first confirming the variety. I do this as a routine with any U.S coin I buy. I guess the fact the coin is encapsulated lulls people into a (as it proves, sometimes false) sense of security.
