This has bothered me for a while. I had a rather spectacularly clashed Mercury dime. I posted it to the correct forum and received many favorable responses. A noted expert and Author wanted to photograph my coin for his records. And I told him I had no problem doing so; and asked how he wanted me to send it to him. He replied that I should mail it to him in a first class envelope with insurance and to include a self addressed stamp envelope. Now; I didn't mind so much paying a few bucks postage to send it to him,but was annoyed that he wanted me to pay the postage both ways. I mean; I'm doing him a favor right? So shouldn't he, at the least pay for the postage back? And in fact if I wanted a complete stranger to send me his property so I could photograph it, I think I would offer to pay postage both ways. What say the community?

If I were you, I might just try to photograph it myself and send the photos; I'd be scared to mail a coin unless I absolutely needed to.

Totally agree with llewellin.
We Cubans distrust our mail system for very good reasons, but I would not send the coin under no circumstance, especially if it is a valuable one.
Maybe the US mail system is trustworthy, in which case I would ask myself if the guy himself is trustworthy.
And unless there is a real chance you become famous with the photos because he will mention you in his works, sure he needs to pay the postage bothways.

Send the expert photos or insist that the expert pays U.S. registered mail fees both ways. I would not take the risk of using U.S. 1st class mail. The expert is using a perceived clout of entitlement to have you foot the bill. The expert needs the photos as much as you want to be credited in any future numismatic literary work by the expert. Also insist that you receive a free copy of all future literary works which features your photos or images of your coin.

Send him the pictures and if he doesn't like it, he can find a similar to photograph himself.

Tell him that he can come to you with his photographic equipment if he doesn't want to pay for insured postage both ways.

This may sound crazy, but I understand it from the other side.
I recently published a reference book for a certain niche in the glass insulator collecting hobby. In the book I said I was more than willing to note new entries, but explained the problem with this. B/c insulators weigh a little over a pound (in general), even flat rate I would be looking at about 20.00 or more to register a new entry. If just 10 people have one unlisted entry - I would need to find an extra 200.00. But I am still in the process of paying off the printing bill (very expensive top print nowadays). There is no way I could afford this.
If the expert you are thinking of mailing it to is in the same boat, I see his point of view... and yours!

Earl certainly makes a good point, however it sounds like from your post that he was the one asking to photo your coin.
If it were me I'd offer to send him photos for free, however if he wants the coin from someone I don't have and have no history with I would need collateral before I ever mailed out my property to someone I didn't know

Not sure I'd even talk to someone like that. Not worth your time to help someone not willing to pay postage and both ways. Yet I'd not get involved at all. As already stated, tell him to bring his photo equipment to you.

Unless you have a 'gut feeling' of complete trust in him, don't bother. He hasn't given good vibes so far. We all know your coin is irreplaceable. There is a possibility that it could blow up into a much larger issue than just postal fees.
Would the ANS be able to comment about info on a similar coin from their data base? (for a fee)
Send him pictures. Everybody I know of who is doing honest research is after information only; they never actually ask for the coin.

I can see both sides but if it were me doing the asking for such favor I would kindly ask if the person would mind paying the postage before just assuming he would do so. I wouldn't mind contributing to his research if I felt it was a "request" rather than an assumption on his part that I would.

Quote: Thats funny, "send me the coin". I'd like to photograph every members most expensive coin. Please send your coins to me & pay postage. There is no need to remit return postage as I will be photographing them in my new CCF funded house in Cancun. In case someone can not tell, I'm joking. Do not send me any coins... unless you're me Secret Santa inwhich case I'd like to declare, I've been very good this year!
