Hey guys

So eariler today I stopped by the convenient store on my way home to grab a gallon of milk :)
Didn't pay much attention at the time but after making it home and kicking back a few minutes I as always throw any pocket change I have in my daughters piggy bank ( looking threw them as I do so )

So I notice the Wheat cent as it was reverse Side up in my hand , I thought well just another 50s or late 40s...
To my surprise it was a 1921 that looks to be a higher grade , since it didn't have a mint mark I though it might be worth a buck or so ..

Well I just checked my RedBook and it has this date at $22 In AU 50 , I'm no good with LWC and this coin does have something going On with the top right side of reverse but I thought it was a nice find ...
I've only found one eariler dated cent in circulation , a 1918s but is was heavily worn ...

Even If it's a details coin due to reverse , I wanted to see what you guys thought about it !!

Good lord! One heck of a find! Very hard to find in AU+ condition. I'd say AU-55 maybe 58 but probably toward 53-55.

Reverse has gunk though.

Thanks drew

Yeah I didn't realize it was a pretty decent find until I checked my RedBook as I thought most of the Philly mint 1920s cents might be a few bucks tops in AU ...

Funny thing is I've bought a few batches of wheats on ebay at auction over the corse of a couple years and a few rolls from a guy at a flea market last year and other than a lower grade 13s didn't get much of anything ...
I've also found several over the years in circulation but rarely anything older than 1950s though ...

It almost looks like the reverse has a light rub threw this blackish gunk , any thoughts on maybe acetone bath or just leave it be ?

Wow that's a truly outstanding find! I'd agree with around AU55 for this one.

I think you should soak it in some acetone to see if that tar on the back will dissolve; hopefully there is no damage underlying the tar.

Congratulations on your 250 posts, Coinguy1986!

Great find!.. not a bad looking coin looks AU-50ish to me a soak in acetone would help get the gunk off.

I'm not quite as optimistic. Before looking at other ratings, I decided on a choice EF, about EF-45. That's not to far from AU, though. And yes, try the acetone for the reverse "problem".
Rest in Peace

Wow 250 yeah I didn't realize until you mentioned it :)

Thanks everyone
I'm going to get the acetone out later today and hopefully remove the gunk from the reverse , I've had it really help silver coins at times but other time it's not had much affect at all !!
So this will be the first copper coin I've tried , so I guess we will see how it goes :)

Good luck on the reverse, but I'm not overly optimistic. Almost certain to be at least a stain left over.

Please show us the results!

That is one heck of a find!

EF-45 at minimum... details from the reverse.

Crop those pics so we can get a closer look and show us the after acetone soak please.

Fantastic to find this in change!

NICE FIND!

Looks AU to me. Don't rush off on trying to conserve the coin now! TIME TO HIT THE BRAKES! Show us more pictures of the reverse first. We need to evaluate the issue FIRST before just jumping in. This is a coin worthy of careful conservation....if any at all.

I'm on the XF-AU fence. I think the reverse would keep this in XF, but with a little TLC who knows?
