Here's a few I found last week. Some decent 1940's and a 1941 and another 1938S. The is 4 in 5 months after it took me 3 years 300+ boxes to find the first one. Where are all the 1950D's    Edited by jack jeckel

/vent on What happened to all the keeper nickels? Nickels used to be my most "fruitful" rolls. Now I get very little in the way of keepers. Of course, my "used to be" was 25-30 years ago and, yes, I saved the "keepers" from then only to begin re-emerging them in the last few weeks. I know, I know, things have "changed" and the keepers have been "kept" out over the years. It's all "relative." I am getting very few "keepers" from cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters (except I built a state collection and am working the ATB collection). And by "keepers," I don't mean only the "jackpot" coins, but I also use/used lower mintage and S mints as "keepers." Other than die varieties, what is left as "keepers"? And what denomination yields more "keepers"? There seems to be very little "lower mintage" in the last 20-30 years (but see 2009). A box for three War Nickels seems, well, frustrating. But I've always liked searching nickels. /vent off |

Three War Nickels in a box, or for that matter, any three keepers in a box is great. We average about 1.5 keepers per box, but on the other hand, we don't keep nearly as many as some nickel hunters do. |

Garoyn - I think it's just your readjustment. A recalibration. Keep in mind that the 'keeper' pool mintages combined are dwarfed by the modern era mintages (starting in 1964). Nickelsearcher has done the statistics on the obsolescence of old nickels combined with the massive numbers of later coins, finding keepers is a challenge.
If you reduce your selections to low mintage (under 20 million) dates and select AU/BU coins, you'll only set aside around a handful. Expand that to include error/variety coins; another 2-3. If you're a pre-1960 nickel hoarder, then you get around 25 keepers.
Are these typical to your hunts?

Yeah, I think you're right. I was mostly venting. Recalibration is in order.
My data is a little skewed--only 20-25 rolls and I hit somebody's dump for part of that. My "keeper" threshold is pretty liberal--<100,000,000 and the 68-S, 69-S, 70-S. And I would keep any full steps I found. That doesn't seem to be a distinguishing feature any more--the mint figured out how to strike full steps.
I have been sampling all denomination rolls to find what gets me the most "fun," or the highest keeper percentage. Definitely used to be nickels, but there have been so many minted with so few new keepers.
Lately, I've had a broader keeper range, because I had to fill album holes post-1985. {grin} But that's mostly done now.
By the pure numbers, post-1985 there have been a gazillion nickels minted, with the only new keepers being 09-P and 09-D. So the pot has been significantly diluted. Used to be, back in the day, I would actually keep 20% or so of the nickels I searched. Some of those I recently released back into the wild, because I've had way too many tubed nickels.
The pre-60 keeper every two rolls you mention is in line with what I've been seeing in the last couple of weeks.
Actually, I guess nickel roll searching will be easier now--fewer to keep {grin}

Garoyn - sounds like your dialed in. I took around 30 years off; CRH was quite different as you've noticed. I think to myself often that I should have kept with it. But spilt milk.
Cbass - I'd take finding a beat up 39D to complete the challenge. Just need the bank to cooperate and hand me boxes of old rolls.
uruman - looks like you could have a blast doing some variety hunting!!

In spite of my, uh, "venting" earlier, I managed to snag a 1950-D today.  Whaddya mean that's the wrong denomination?! Oh bother. |
