The Goal: 25,000 Rolls Of Nickels (All Searchers Welcome!)

Nickelitus - sorry for the delayed response. Crazy busy in my world at the moment. I copied your data to post a quick response or two. Something to keep in mind is that I've done under 40 boxes so less than half of your effor. Here it goes...

*1930's - 93
38P - 15
38D - 0
38S - 0
39D - 1
39S - 0

Oddly enough, the 39D is the only one I didn't find for my primary set. I have around 10 38s and had nearly 2 rolls of 39s, but I released a roll of the worn 39s a few weeks back. Regarding the 2015 project, no 38/39 D or S specimens. For that matter my second album is shy of those specimens as well. Still, reasonable correlation on numbers.


*1940's - 1,062
42D - 5
46S - 8
48S - 6
49S - 9

Similar again on these key/semikey dates. I think I've found around half as many 49Ss, but proportionate to your numbers. Regarding total counts, I really can't say since I don't keep stats or excess coinage. Basically I build rolls of the best coins I find, periodically going through the rolls to glean out the worst for release. That said I have rolls for every year (except for the war years) that are full/partially full and if I had to guess, I have around 300 or so that I've kept. Reasonable correlation.

I think I've only found 4 1950s thus far, 2 1950D, 5 1951S and perhaps around 6 1955. Regarding totals, I think I've kept around 400 of the better 50s coinage. Reasonable correlation.

I think I've found a little more than half your number but most tend to be P mint items. However, I've found similar numbers on the dates you posted, so maybe I'm doing alright here on the East Coast with the Ds and Ss.

I've done unreasonably well here. I forget how many I have now but all were found CRH. 7 came a few weeks back out of a single box, 1887 being the oldest. Maybe I have 18 or 21?

9 - With Dates
26- No Dates

Again, I've done unreasonably well here. I found nearly 60 so far this year. Twice I found 26 in a box (one of those had the 7 Vs). Most with dates. Maybe 14 without dates this year?

*2009's - 29
11P and 18D

Around 20 P and around 10 D here in the east.

*Henning - 0 confirmed, have many suspects to check
*Proof's - 9

0 Henning as well but maybe around 15 Proof and a couple SMS coins.

Hard to say on the Error (or Variety) coins. I search for both and I've found a few nice clashes and several DDRs. I've also kept rolls of AU/BU specimens. On the first good box of the year I pulled 300+ AU/BU 60-64 P and D (along with 26 Buffalo).

I'm not sure about Ireland, but the rest I've found too. Going through my finds the other night, I realized that I have a 1915 Gold Ducat. I thought it was 'gold-like' but now I'm thinking it's the real deal. How about that find for a nickel? Online research suggests $120-150. I need to get that coin authenticated tomorrow.

As for the 2015 Jefferson project, the first 90% got done in a hurry. If I wasn't concerned I'd say folks could put that together in 5 boxes without much trouble. I took 9 to get the better/best grades for the more common dates. Then another 7 to get the next 3%. Tougher going now as you might suspect. For the project, I'm missing the following (to my recollection):

1939 D and S
1942 P
1943 D
1944 D and S
1945 D
1946 S
1949 S

Can't think of #12 off the top of my head, but I know it's 12. I think that I'll find 2-4 more by the end of the year. I only average a box every 2 weeks or so. In the next 10 boxes, I might get the outstanding dates to around 8. The tough dates are....tough...but not impossible. Location helps as I see the West Coast folks finding the harder S mint dates with far greater regularity than we folks in the East. But it's a fun challenge with great satisfaction and reward.

Thank you jbuck. I've been fortunate and I am grateful. I see a few fellow CRH enthusiasts (Jack, Carlos especially) with routine finds. I haven't been as lucky as them on consistency, but the spot good fortune (especially this year) keeps me in the running. At first I thought I was especially lucky on the quality/grade of the finds but as I've seen here with members, we all get lucky with the occasional dumped collection pieces in high grades.

With that said, any of our newly engaged CRH enthusiasts can build, with patience, a fine set of Jefferson nickels. Many great pieces will come along with patience and persistence. Happy hunting folks - the weekend is here!

Rackster - #1 hope you have found some gold! Thank you for the reply, Forgot about your crazy boxes with the Buffalos & V's. I am in a Buffalo skunk streak right now, however finding many high grade coins of late (main set and others are looking much nicer all the time). Overall seems like a lot of similarities, I also found one of nickelsearchers stats at $11,500 to compare and again lots of similarities.
Seems my theory may be wrong that customer rolls would be better for Buffalos with the 2005's for added confusion when rolling a lot of coins. Still think it is going to happen some day the full roll of Buffalos. Think I am going to play the vinegar mystery date game soon.

I just finished box #5 (did approx $120 in rolls before I graduated to boxes). One new coin, 1951-D - got a little anxious before realizing 1950-D is the key date :(. One War Nickel. 22 empty slots to go, so at this point I guess every box with even a single collectable is a good box.

It's been a while since I've posted but I have been searching.

My 5th box of nickels- '85 Canadian, '90 Canadian, a '2? buffalo, and my most unusual find a '74 with a stamped P where a War Nickel mint mark would be.
