Started a new box today and got one in the first roll! 1947 P. That was the coin with the highest mintage number (outside of the War Nickels) that I was still seeking. That leaves very few "easy" ones left to find. Update - got a second early in the same box - 1952 S. Edited by dcunitedfan

...and not done yet, just got a 1942 S, also another slot filled, and the box is only half finished! 3 in one box is more than I expected at this stage.
Update: finished the box, no more new finds, a couple of substitutions. Nice to rise above the recent trend and pick up *more* new coins at this late stage than either of the previous 2 boxes! But now with only 19 unfound coins left, I'm expecting I will start encountering boxes without a single new find.

Nice chip, especially on the 1901 liberty, 2 dateless buffalos, 1944S, 1945D, 1946S, and the 1951S. The 1955 is a nice pick too. Looks like you ran into a release of someone's collection to get that many low mintage specimens!

Can't easily get boxes where I live so I got 10 rolls from my local bank.
Finds:
1939P(2) 1940-P(2) 1942-D(Non-silver but a hole filler) 1953-P
That was it for my first ever nickel hunt

nice job on the first hunt! are you in a small town area? I'm guessing that is the reason you might not be able to get boxes.

Yeah, we have a small local branch of a still small area bank. I was told by my banker that if I go to the main bank, about a 30 minute drive that they might have or will order me about any coins I want. If I do it every now and than, she said they won't do it for me if I go every week. Maybe every other week.

That might be the right play Brian. I do the every other ( or every other, other) week event at my local bank branch. Got my two boxes yesterday: both solid 2014s. So no hunting for me this weekend.

The boxes I get (aren't these a standard design?) are solid cardboard on 5 of 6 sides, but the bottom has small holes cut out over each nickel in its wrapper, large enough to see the coins. Before I walk away from the teller, I look through the holes and see if I have a box of all shiny new nickels, in which case I politely explain that I would rather have another box because all-new coins don't suit my needs. That usually works to get another box with a proper mix. (I also tell the teller upfront before they grab a box that I want older coins) One of the branches near me seems to do more business in general and also seem to be more willing to indulge me when this happens.

dc - that is the case; same box. However, the vault is on a timer so it's not an easy turn around. Occasionally they might have an extra box, but it's the luck of the draw (small branch supporting just a few local merchants). They know to look for 'mixed' coins through the holes and some can tell....others cannot and it always depends on what was delivered. And there's a balance to what we do. Some tellers are less interested in what we do and view what they do (ordering/lugging) as being generous. I tend to view it that way too. So, I'll accept the coins without looking and expect that on occasion I'll return solid boxes unopened. I've gotten 5 or so boxes like these 2 since the start of the year. Just the way it goes.
But when you are on a streak like you are, it makes it harder to take the lumps.

4th Bag of Nickels just some hole fillers. I have found no War, Buffalo, or V nickels in any of the bags. In 8 boxes I would at least find 6 Wars.  |

Rack - know what you mean. I already wonder how I'll feel when I enter the 'dead zone' of long stretches of boxes without new finds. Don't want to be viewed as an undue burden on the system, and that's what keeps me down to no more than 1 box a week.
