I think that I'm probably done with the 2015
Jefferson nickel project. The goal was to complete the set at 90% by the end of the year. I bought 30 boxes, 28 of them searchable as the other 2 were solid 2014s that I end up returning. Here's the tally -
V nickels - 10, the oldest being 1887
Buffalo nickels - 60, the oldest being dateless 1913 T1, and a pickled 1913 D T2
1930s - 71, (7) 1938 and (64) 1939; a couple 1938 DDRs and couple nice 1939, one with nearly full enhanced steps
1940s - 445, (19)
War Nickels, several low mintage S specimens, and a few 1941 Large S
1950s - 495, a 1950D (second one) and a 1954 WDDO-002; several low mintage S specimens
1960s - 2015 - 617, many AU/AU+ specimens including 3 rolls of uncirculated 1964 OBWs, a few DDRs as well, (3) 2004 WDDO-001 (2 Stage D, 1 Stage C), several moderate clash specimens, (13) impaired proof and 1 liberated SMS specimen
Foreign - 164, numerous countries found, Canada being the most prevalent, 1915 gold Ducat
Error/Variety - 107, as noted above, a few attributed/ID'ed specimens found for DDOs/DDRs, a CU-5C-1983-04
Cud, several 1983/1984 clashes, a few RPMs
Going back over the year's worth of entries, several of our fellow CRH enthusiasts had outstanding years. Jack may have been the most successful given the numerous posts of key dates/MMs. But lots of folks really did well with their hunts! It's rather impressive when you total the results of everyone here. I'd be willing to bet that we would have collectively built 2-3 complete sets. As for me, 165/174 for a 95% completion point. If folks didn't care much about grade of their coins, they could make the 90% point in around 3-4 boxes. Being choosey, they could do it in about 10 boxes. The next 5% though comes slowly, but as most here know, it's the journey and not the end point (never mind the final 5%). And with that said, I'm still waiting to find a 1939D to close out my circulation find album. No luck in 2015 on that item.
With this project, I really slacked off on searching cents. I think I will pick that back up in 2016, but no new challenges regarding % of completion. I think that this coming year, the focus will be on organization and cataloging. I have dozens of nickels that require further study and attribution. The true value of what I've found is unknown.and unknowable. But having some rough numbers to things and knowing where I have duplicates will be helpful. I plan to post a few of these at the LCS to generate some funds to purchase other needed/wanted items. However, I will continue to search nickels for the elusive 1939 D. While it's not a race, I'd like to put a check in that check-box.
