You'll find that 1944-S someday... a really strange anomaly that you haven't found one yet, to be honest.

TNT - I like your tracker, good luck finding that 44S. It is one of the two I haven't found in the wild either, although I haven't searched much in the past few years.

I agree, more complex than what I used. I only kept track of the 20 lowest mintage dates. I found a total of 1315 War Nickels and only 19 were 1944S in my days of mucho searching that lasted about 6 years ending about 6 years ago. All were very low grade or cull.



I never did. Only coin counter near me is where I used to dump my nickels. That is until they took it out....they probably got tired of helping me pick up nickels off the floor as they were flying out the coin return ....lol. I was searching the equivalent of 10- 15 boxes a week at times so that little machine filled up often.

Hi everyone. I hunted nickels for a while last year and would like to share my results. The information in this forum has been very helpful to me, and I figured I'd contribute my finds in order to give others a point of comparison. I don't have enough time to regularly post, but I plan on updating with new finds once in a while.

I didn't keep a spreadsheet for nickels (as I do with dimes and quarters), but counted a total of 52 boxes that I hunted. I did not notice a difference in finds between MWR and CWR, and about 40 of the boxes were MWR.

From the 52 boxes, I found 51 War Nickels, 16 Buffalos, and one 1906 Liberty nickel. I included photos of the more notable finds.

Ten Buffalos had readable dates (1920 x 2, 1920-D, 1920-S, 1923-S, 1929 x2, 1936, 1936-S, 1937). I used vinegar to reveal the other six (1915, 1916, 1916-D, 1917, 1918, 1927-D).

My best box had 6 War Nickels, a 1929 Buffalo, and over one hundred pre-1960 Jeffersons.

The 1923-S, with the "23" readable, was probably the biggest surprise. Another notable find was an AU 43-P. Unfortunately, I didn't find many key date Jeffersons - only one 1938-D which was a bit ugly. Lots of semi-keys, though.

I ultimately stopped doing nickels because this denomination doesn't seem to circulate very much in my area, and I'd end up maxing out vault space (or just wearing out my welcome) in each of my dump banks. Also, it seemed to me like 100% uncirculated MW boxes are more common in nickels. Maybe that's just my impression, though.
