As always, looking for some expert advice. I'm looking at building dollar sets starting with IKE. I have SBA's done. So i'll be building IKE, Sacagawea's and of course the presidential.

What is the best way to build these sets? I'm thinking about buying the mint sets with the IKE's, and the newer mint sets for the Sacs 2000-2006 (have 07). Getting both p&d mints, then working on proofs. Will this be the cheaper way? This way I'm getting more coins for the buck and will have some left over for my kennedy, quarter, etc... sets.

Any advice on the most efficient way to do this will be appreciated :) Thanks!!

Honestly, the cheapest way to do it is to find and buy a album that has most or all of the coins already in it and then fill and upgrade it. For some reason it is always cheaper to buy what someone else has put together then to do it yourself. Especially when there are "key dates" involved.

Ceaton. I too am looking to expand my Ike collection...I only have 2. What I am doing is trying to obtain circulated Ike's..then when that is complete, move along to Unc or mint state. I have SBA as well, not sure exactly what I have but I know I dont have a 1999, same strategy for me with the IKE's. I already have plenty of Prez. both Unc and circulated, not P mint marks though on the circulated. I do have P mint mark Prex in sealed rolls but I'm not unsealing them. Good Luck and let me know maybe we can work together on this project...Franklins too!

I think it depends on whether you like the thrill of the hunt and also whether you wish to include the proofs. You can get SAC and Presidential from the bank and try to put together some of these for face valule, keeping the best coins. However, the SAC set is very hard to do from circulation because many weren't released, like 2002-present. And now that they are mixing the Presidential dollars with SBA and SAC, it will be harder to fill the tougher date SAC. But I have been able to get 2002-present SAC dollars from circulation.

For IKEs, you buy a batch of 100 coins on ebay for about $150- pretty decent, and very likely get the whole set or close to it, and then dump the rest back on ebay.

Thanks for all the input so far :)

With the Sac set, I think my plan is to buy mint sets from 2000 up, that way I can work on my State Quarter collection at the same time. Seems to be decently cheap, and I can knock out 2 birds with one stone. Then i'll buy the proof sac's when I find decent deals etc..

For the IKE's, the mint sets are decent in price, but by doing that, I cannot take advantage of the other coins in the set like I can with Sac's. I see these sets w/proofs are going for around $200, which isn't bad, but I find its like cheating buying a full set :) Coin show next weekend, i'll see what I can find there. These sets are my side project while I work on my lincoln wheats. That set was getting slow so I needed something to keep my interest :) I'm still not sure how to go about the IKE's. Those completed sets are awfully tempting.

Lucky, i'd be glad to help you out. Shoot me an email sometime, maybe we'll figure something out ;)
