Hi,
I started collecting coins last month. So far I have 5 Mercury dimes dates 2-1944, 1944s 1945d and 1942.
A 1898 Barber dime
1961d Roosevelt
1907 Liberty V nickel
1918 1919 Buffalo nickels
1946 Jefferson nickel
1903 1893 indian head pennies
1979 Susan B Anthony dollar
A bicentennial Ike dollar
2 bicentennial quarters
I'm collecting to leave to my kids, any suggestions on what I should collect that stand the best chance of raising in value?
Oh I forgot to mention my 1927 Standing Liberty quarter.
Thanks in advance for any advice

to the CCF!
Seems like you have a nice starting collection!

By the way... Seated Liberty quarters are good coins, that I truly think will rise in value. you may want to consider getting a few of those!
Rest in Peace

To CCF , my advice is forget about collecting coins that you think will go up in value in the future.
just collect what interests you, and you will have a lot more fun. trust me the kids will either be happy with them or show no interest at all as is the case for most of us.
Good luck ,and enjoy your new hobby.

Thanks t-bop!
I love all coins and holding them makes me think of when life was less complex.
And I do hope my kids will share my love for antiques.
Rest in Peace

Welcome! One fun way of collecting is to find at least one type of coin for a given time frame. Collect one of each of the different types made in the years 1900-2000, for example.

It is a good way to find very interesting older coins without needing to spend a great deal to become acquainted with them. You may find that some types, like Buffalo nickels or Indian Head cents are what you really love and then you can attempt to put a set of those together.

As has been mentioned, I wouldn't suggest trying to put a coin collection together that is going to appreciate in value, because most of the time the most common coins (those priced under $100) take decades to increase in value, if at all.

You can make coin collecting an inexpensive way to learn history, too, which is one of the most enjoyable aspects for many folks.

Thanks for joining with us!
Rest in Peace

I agree with what's been posted and would caution you to take your time learning before buying.

If you have questions about anything, ask here. Check sold prices on-line so you know what a fair price is.

I hope the kids learn to love antiques, too.

I'd suggest not 'investing' in coins. Collecting them is fine but over the years coin collecting has not proven to be a very good investment for most collectors. You can get much higher returns elsewhere.

I'd also suggest letting your kids help you decide what to collect so that they might grow a fondness for collecting and not just look at it as dad's hobby. Not all people enjoy collecting coins, in my family, if I were to gift some nice collectable coins to my cousins their first stop would be the pawn shop or the cash for gold store so they could get the latest IPhone with the proceeds.

to the forums!

Just a cool hobby, but not really an investment tool and welcome.

There are some good answers posted here, of course some will
Have different ideas Powhatan to collect.

First I would like to say, collect coins because you enjoy them,
not with the thought that you will make a lot of money on them.

I think most collectors want their coins to increase in value, but
the truth is, the majority of coins that end up in collection will be
sold later for less then their purchase price.

You will hear advice to buy the best condition of coins you can afford.
And to stay away from problem coins. Both are good advice.
Most new collectors pay more for the same coins than experienced
collectors. The most common mistake collectors make is over paying
for coins.

My suggestion for new collectors.
Learn as much as you can about the coins you are buying
Learn what coins buy and sell for, and find you comfort level.

A good focus might be
U.S. Type set
Morgan dollars
Jefferson nickels.
