I just got the 2016 Australian Silver Kookaburra in the mail and am quite pleased with the design. Really nice piece in my opinion, but now I see that they are going to be issuing the round with a little monkey "privy mark" on it to denote that 2016 is the year of the monkey.

I know that these privy marks are nothing new. I'm aware of many different ones on the Maple leafs, but I'm curious if it's really worth it? The Kookaburra series is already a series that seems to appreciate well, should I pick some of these up and hope they increase in premiums in the future?

The premium does increase on these low mintage(50000) coins and I would definitely pick these up at current prices. Just look at the first privy lunar coin n the series, the 2012 coin was a horrible design but you have to pay a hefty premium for them.

WRT the Australian 'privy mark', sometimes called a privy seal. What probably matters the most is whether the privy is on all of that years coin mintage or just a subset. For example, the Somali Elephant bullion coins produce 100K+ of their standard yearly coin, but also print a far more limited set of the same coin with the addition of a 'privy seal' for the lunar year animal on the Elephant Reverse. These coins are far less common. Mintage for 2012-13 was 10K each, 2014 was 5K, and 2015 was just 3K.

The mintage numbers is just one of the factors to consider if you are wondering whether the coin is anything special. Other factors, I think, is the coins general beauty in design as well as condition (mint state).

My 2 cents worth..
