I just picked up a copy of a dealer price list for the year 1939. looking through the prices it is almost comical. For example

1896 $1 fine $2.50 new $3.50
1896 $2 fine $4.00 new $6.00
1896 $5 fine $8.00 new $12.00

1899 $5 fine $7.50 new $10.00

If time travel was only possible

Reminds me though of a quote during the Great Depression:

During the depression you could by a bowl of soup and a slice of bread for a dime...but who the heck had a dime?

I wonder if someone will be saying "To be a collector in 2016" 77 years from now... almost certainly!

Why only go back that far?
Go back to 1896 and they would all cost only face value for Crisp Uncirculated.

If you go back in time just remember that you will have to play fair, which is to say you can't use your 2016 money; will have to EARN corresponding rate for 1939.

I remember some show or movie about time travel and the person had a suitcase full of coins and paper from each decade so they would have the correct money for each trip back.

I don't have the figure in front of me but $12 back in 1939 would be a decent amount of money still

According to this inflation calculator, $12 in 1939 would be the equivalent to $206.99 now.
