Hi All, My passed away a few years ago and I am now going through his coin collection. We have a bunch of silver coins and Buffalo nickels. A couple of very old pennies dating to the late 1800s and some Morgans. Is there some sort of a computer program that will keep tabs on this. Its a bit overwhelming now. Should I clean the silver coins with silver jewelry cleaner? In addition to the US money I have alot of foreign currency. How does one start to catalog the coins. Thanks Peaches

Cleaning the coins -- even with water -- will greatly reduce their value. There is a section here for inheritances. https://goccf.com/t/167629There are programs for keeping track of coins on a spread sheet -- but a list is fine for starters. Take your time with the coins. I hope you enjoy learning about them. We're here to help.

Welcome ..... DO NOT CLEAN Coins .... As for your second question on cataloging? Yes there database programs tha will help but may I suggest you start by sorting your coins by denomination being careful not to bang up any high grade coins you may come across ..... Handle coins by their edges and don't rub them together ..... You can also further sort the coins such as all the Buffalo nickels in one area and the Jefferson nickels or V-Nickels another ..... Same with the cents, Indian Head one area - wheat cents another .... There is online price and grading guides that would be beneficial .... Search for PCGS Price Guide and PCGS Grading Guide - both will prove huge in your endeavor .... Good luck ..... Don't be afraid to ask questions, especially the dumb ones, they are the easiest to answer!

peaches. Sorry for your loss. The other members above have already posted some valuable advise. Are you wanting to sort, catalog and learn to enjoy the collection yourself or are you wanting to sell the coins? I hope it's the first one and if so welcome to the hobby! Ask any questions that come to mind. The guys and gals here are great.

Hi,
Thanks for the condolences and suggestions. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the collection. I'm just currently sorting.

As has been mentioned, don't hesitate to ask any questions as you progress. It would be hard to ask something that someone won't have a good answer for.
