Hello All Before I begin, please forgive my ignorance. I am very interested in coin collecting, but am feeling a bit overwhelmed with all of the information. I have not yet started my collection, but here are a few coins I am interested in: 1. Kennedy half dollar2. American Eagle Silver Dollar 3. American Buffalo Dollar I am trying to weigh out the pros/cons of bullion vs. circulated/uncirculated/proof coins. I hope to purchase coins that are both enjoyable for me to collect AND provide a fairly sound investment. Any guidance you could provide would be much appreciated! Nice to have you join us! Quote: enjoyable for me to collect AND provide a fairly sound investment In my opinion, you should pick one or the other. Maybe others here will disagree...

Welcome. I love Tennessee. Volunteered in Memphis every year for close to a decade and have some good friends who live in Nashville. Been all over and in between.
Welcome to the community. You will learn a ton here and no need to apologize for ignorance. Even the experts don't know everything, and everyone is here to learn more so you came to the right place.
spence I disagree that you have to chose either enjoyable or investment. I invest on the stock market and that is both enjoyable and an investments coins be the same thing? If you are collecting silver, rare or errors and it can certainly be both.

Hey welcome! I'm also from the TN area! Here is what I do - I have a coin collection and I collect silver as an investment. You don't have to choose one or the other and in some cases one will support the other nicely. I will pick up about 10 ounces of uncirculated silver eagles every other week, and probably about $6-10 (face value) of 90% silver coinage. This week I found a couple quarters (that I'll post pictures of later) that were repunched mint marks. I'll sell those and turn it back into investment and collecting. On the other hand, I have collections of coins purely for the numismatic value of the collection. My favorite are Ikes but unless I find a really great raw one to send in for grading, I'm pretty much done with that set. I've now started on Jefferson nickels to keep myself occupied. Coins that you collect for "fun" can be a great investment also. I have had Ike's that I've paid $4 for, sent in to get graded ($16), and have come back as a high grade of a less common attribution... And now you have a $200 coin that you only paid $20 for. My point is, you don't have to choose one or the other you can include both investing and collecting in your hobby. Get yourself a Red Book and the Cherry Picker's Guide (volume II if you are going to do half dollars) and just start researching and having fun. Any local coin shop worth it's weight would gladly talk your ear off about coins and answer any questions you have!
