I'm trying to free up some storage in my safe so I would like to remove my Proof and Burnished ASEs from their OGP and store the OGP elsewhere where real estate (so to speak) is cheaper.

The question becomes, how do I store the ASEs in their OGP capsules in such a way that they are organized and the capsules won't get scratched? At this time I'm not considering putting them in albums. I thought about buying 2x2 ziplock bags to prevent scratches but that still doesn't help with organization. Maybe a 2x2 coin box or two?

I'm not sure if that setup does these fine coins justice, but cost-wise, it would be pretty effective assuming the capsules would fit in a 2x2 ziplock.

Anybody have other ideas? A Caps album would be perfect if it fit the OGP capsules, which as I understand, it does not.

This is the first thing I thought of:

It says it fits ASEs and is certainly a space saver. I haven't used them myself - yet- but might be worth a look.

If you go the Caps album route, I think you need to get the 40mm Air-Tite direct fit capsules.

Here is an old thread with the same question and a picture of the Eagle brand album.

The capps albums are expensive in that you must purchase their air tights to replace your original capsules. It cost me over $80 to house my type set commemorative dollars in one album and it did not include the last five years. It did clear up space in my safe.

@BiederCoins - I saw those when I was perusing Wizard last night for storage ideas. I wasn't sure if that would accept the capsules; it really looks like it's for raw coins but could be wrong. Also this was off-putting: "Items are for shipping purposes only and not recommended for long term storage". It's an option I'll keep in mind though.

@jgfindring - That looks like a great possibility, thank you for posting that link. I had searched for posts regarding this in the past couple of years but didn't go back that far. I like that better than my 2x2 box idea as I can actually view the coins easily if I wish to. I didn't see that as a product that Wizard offers - I'll have to check the links in that 4-year-old post and see if they're still valid. (I know valleycoin is, just kidding)

@muddler - are the air tights for these Caps albums proprietary or can you use the Air Tite brand capsules?

It's my understanding you can use Air-Tite capsules in Caps albums.

You can get it direct from Eagle Coin. I like it because it leaves the ASE's in their original capsules, takes much less room than OGP and makes viewing all of them easier and more pleasant.

The first two reasons are the criteria I was looking to address originally, but the third reason is very appealing too. And now that I think about it, why wouldn't I want to be able to easily view the ASEs every once in a while? This would be much better than opening up each individual ASE OGP box once every 10 years.

I guess the OGP goes into a shoe box on the top shelf of my closet.

@Celticknot, the capsules sent were called air tight, I don't know if they are a specific brand. They are much thinner than the government capsules.

Well, you instigators have got me thinking album/binder now.

Gah!

It's good though - you've reminded me with this discussion I should really be thinking, "what's right for the collection?", not just "how do I free up safe space?"

While I do want to free up some space in the safe, these ASEs should be appropriately displayed and stored. And I think I can do both with the suggestions in this thread.

@jgfindring - how tall is your album (including slip case if applicable)? I'm looking at 12.5" clearance. I still like those pages since I can just drop the OGP capsules in.

@anyonewithCapsAlbums - how many ASEs would fit in one album? And how much would an album + pages + airtights run per album? Is muddler's estimate of $80 reasonable? That doesn't seem too bad considering one ASE proof is 2/3 of that these days.

The pages fit a standard three ring binder if bought separately, or come in one if bought that way, so 11 3/4" tall. I'm using a 1" binder, which holds 3 pages easily. I am keeping the proofs, burnished unc and ones from the anniversary sets, that is all the ones that came from the mint in capsules and have filled the first two pages and have started on the third. With forty some ASE's in it, the album is HEAVY.

I bet!

That's why I assume the 7-ring binders would be better for supporting pages as heavy as this.

Ok, after much hemming and hawing, I purchased the CAPS ASE album #2228 (ASEs 1986-2011) and Air-Tites. It wasn't cheap but ultimately less than the price of two proof ASEs direct from the mint. While I would rather spend money on more ASEs, I always gotta remind myself to do what's right for the collection (as I mentioned above). This relatively small investment will make my coins much more accessible while at the same time freeing up safe space.

My biggest hang-up, honestly, was a change in mentality -- reclassifying (some of) my bullion ASEs as numismatic in order to put them in the album. But that's not too terribly hard as I've shifted away from considering bullion ASEs as pure bullion anyway, given the premiums over spot.

Looking forward to this! Pics to come when the goods arrive. If I like the way the first one turns out I'll definitely get the 2012-date album.

honestly I use one of those inexpensive 50 pocket albums and stuff the capsule in the pockets. It works great.
