Hi everyone how's it going? I was just wondering how many here has resubmitted coins and got a better grade? I've seen a few coins that I thought were under graded and a couple I thought were graded high. I have a Seated Liberty half dime that grades vf30 and I've seen ef45 Seated half dimes that look worse and have more contact marks.

Who was the company grading the coins? and do you have pictures of the two for comparison?

Contact marks affect eye appeal and market grade but NOT the technical grade.

PCGS and no I don't have a picture of both coins to compare. I was just wondering if anyone has had coins they resubmitted grade higher. TPG are human so surely they make mistakes. They can't be dead on all the time.

I know a couple of dealers who have submitted certain key date coins multiple times to get the grade they felt the coin deserved. You just have to make sure the coin being resubmitted is worth it. I know of a 1916d Mercury dime that was resubmitted 16 times for that extra point. It was a multi thousand dollar price difference so it made it worthwhile to keep sending back.

Yes, these two. Of course, I had to pay the fees twice.

Wow 16 times, that's crazy. And that's a big difference between vg10 and vf20.

Absolutely keep resubmitting if you think its worth it. I recently sent in a coin that I showed to a LCS who said not to bother; its not worth anything I was wasting money etc etc and I thought well he knows more than I do about grading but my gut told me not to trust this guy from past experiences I had with him and sure enough I got a grade of MS65 on this particular coin. I have had a few success stories with TPG getting higher grades which tells me the "experts" can have an off day just like the rest of us humans....

It's not about being human or "off". Grading is subjective. Many of us have changed the grades of our own coins over time. We may get more critical or loose as we learn more and see more. Sometimes, another experienced person will look at it and point out things I may have missed or didn't give credit.

I bought a 1729 Gold Ducat graded MS63 by NGC that I cracked out to put in a 2x2 with my other Australian Proclamation coins in an album.
I then decided to have these coins graded and sent them off to PCGS along with the Ducat.
PCGS graded the ducat Unc Details (altered surfaces)which was a BS grade that I and the person I bought the coin from totally disagreed with .
I sent the coin back to NGC and it now resides in an NGC slab with a well deserved MS65 grade

Here is the coin, Nothing wrong with the surfaces.
PCGS simply got it Wrong.
