I am curious what the experts will say about this.
It does not make since that it could be real.

Quote: Says electro does that mean fake? Yes, it does. Definition from the CCF Library (left side navigation menu) Quote: electrotype A duplicate coin created by the electrolytic method, in which metal is deposited into a mold made from the original. The obverse and reverse metal shells are then filled with metal and fused together - after which the edges sometimes are filed to obscure the seam. IMO, this fake is not worth anything close to the asking price. Wreath Electrotype Fake I acquired several years ago:

1793 cents are not my area of expertise, but.... "hole filler" is sometimes used to describe counterfeit / replicas. "electro" is probably short for "electrotype" - a method of making counterfeits. Finally, I have never seen a seller try to lend credibility to their coin by TAPING parts of an NGC label to a 2x2.

Electro is ebay slang for "electroplated" which was a method contemporary counterfiters used to make counterfits for circulation which are highly prized collectors items today however if you put the word counterfit even with contemporary before it ebay will kill the listing. So he's just getting around the ebay bot while still conveying what it is to those that collect them. However I have no idea if the price is high but I would suspect so

Do we know if the no-no site sells modern Chinese electroplates to masquerade as contemporary counterfits?

NGC may have body bagged it but that would be the extent of their involvement. Truly misrepresented.

NGC might be the source of the "electrotype" determination, perhaps? As the seller doesn't specify the intent of the NGC label he's applied, I agree ... deceptive marketing!

It's an electrotype copy. Not an electroplated original.

The collectible 19th century electrotypes were produced privately to satisfy the demand for collectors who could not obtain genuine specimens of the real thing. "Electro" does not mean "electroplated"; it means electrolytic deposition of copper on a mold. The results are very obvious copies, even by a novice, and should never fool anyone as being genuine US minted coins. I own a few early electrotypes of chain cents, 1799 cents and 1804 cents. They usually trade hands for ~ $100. (Does ebay allow the sale/auction of early electrotypes?)

That 1793 Half Cent is not a bad specimen of a 19th century electrotype.

Shouldn't all electrotype'd coins say COPY like Moe's does since it is not an original?
