I am still fairly new to this, what do you think? The coin is damaged,I was wondering how badly it affects grade.

Somewhere in the F12 range, but damaged. So a details grade. Probably F details

I'm trying to figure out value. I paid $45 for it, I feel like it was a fair price, until I can get a nicer one at the right price. Just trying to figure out if I did alright.

yeah 45 is alright. Not too long ago we had a member who bought one that was completely beat up (as if someone took bb pellets to it, I think). And it was around the same details grade. He ended up reselling it for a little over $30.

You really can't grade from these photos, too dark.

with Paulsz, probably " F Details "; and the pics are really too dark for an 'accurate guesstimate'.

Practicing good buying is almost as important as practicing grading. I find my upgrading coins that I now wish I would've waited for "when I can afford a better one".
$45 is fair and you should be able to get that back but that's only because it's a key date, with other coins you wouldn't.
Set grade goals for your collection and save for them. Filling slots with low grade examples will get costly in the long run.
Happy collecting!

Thanks for the input Wade. For the past year I've been trying to do just what you said. Sometimes I get caught in the moment lol. I really appreciate the advice. Another reason I enjoy this forum.

Page 269 in the 2011 Charlton lists this cent as a Full vine,16 full stems..

..and about 2x the value that you would place on a regular 1858..

I thought it was Full Vine when I examined it, but wasn't sure. To bad for the damage.
