I would appreciate thoughts on this CBH. The fields have virtually no contact marks, but there is an area of flatness over the eagle's left talons, arrow feathers, and branch, corresponding to some loss of detail on the obverse. Could this possibly be related to a weak strike rather than wear? I plan to send this to PCGS, but I wanted to first get an idea of AU vs MS.

Looks like original surfaces I'd venture at least a mid AU grade if not higher. Strike always can be a issue for this series especially the earlier dates. It all depends on what you have into the coin and if you think it's worth the $40-$50 to get graded.

Always best to remove from the 2x2 when taking photos. Looks to be AU-55 details as the surface color looks like it may be cleaned.

Thanks. This is part of an inherited collection, so I don't have anything into it yet. It was originally purchased in the early 1980s. I probably will get it slabbed and out of that 2x2, and I'll take better photos before I send it to get graded. Just wondering if everyone thinks the loss of detail on the left talons is all wear.

AU-55. The surface looks funky, but I cannot tell if it has been cleaned. Could you take pictures from different lighting and camera angles?

I don't believe the coin has been cleaned or artificially toned. The surfaces look original to me, but admittedly I'm no expert, and we'll see what PCGS thinks.

AcesKings, thanks so much for the Overton variety attribution! It was interesting to see it match to a known die pair.
Rest in Peace

I'm not seeing any halo effect anywhere to indicate a cleaning, old or otherwise. No change from fields to devices, either. I'd say not cleaned. Grade, high AU, possibly 58 considering the slight weakness of the center strike both obverse and reverse.

I don't think it has been cleaned, at least not to the point of being a "problem" coin. There is a trace of wear but most of the reverse weakness looks strike-related. A righteous grade of AU-53 to 55 seems reasonable. Pretty nice coin!
