A friend of mine bought this coin in Israel recently and became super excited when he saw that a similar looking coin had sold for a huge price at auction.
I'm a bit more skeptical and liable to think that it is a reproduction but I said I would check with the experts (yourselves!)as I have no experience with vintage coins.

If you can give an opinion I would be most grateful.

Russian rubles did not have edge inscriptions with weights/fineness (as this one seems to) until 1798, apparently. Actual 1766 rubles had fancy edges with no inscriptions at all.

I've recently had to evaluate a supposed 1720s ruble (don't recall the specific date) with an 1810s edge inscription. This one is even more obviously fake (the edge inscription as visible doesn't fit any ruble type).

Beyond that, the surfaces are a dead giveaway... this is not a particularly convincing forgery, style-wise.

Let's see, this fake was sown into the lining of a ragged coat and carried to Palestine on foot from Minsk by the seller's great-grandfather as he escaped the Czar's pogroms, right? And only now is it being sold below market value....

Not genuine.

The edge is not inscribed, it's reeded.
