You have to become a member and platinum costs $249/yr (which gets you 8 submissions)

if you want to get graded lets say 100 modern coins in a year
Thats going to cost over $1600.

It seems that its cheaper to buy the coins already graded from coin dealers or ebay.

What am I missing?

I was thinking of buying a lot of mint and proof sets and getting the kennedy's graded but it seems it wouldn't be cost effective.

Also Silver eagles.

Regular collectors don't have memberships. General rule of thumb from coin shop, don't send anything to be encapsulated & graded that is under $100.

Better to cherry pick already graded coins. The only explanation is that common coins are submitted en mass and bulk discounts for grading apply (assuming down to $10 or less per coin).

I have never understood the reasoning behind getting common modern mint and proof coins slabbed. Somebody says "well, I've got a PCGS/NGC/ANACS slabbed MS69 or 70 2015 Kennedy half dollar that has a low population in the census."

So, what?

A modern coin may have a low population in the slabbed census because most people that own those coins (still in the government packaging) KNOW that their coins will grade high and do not want to spend their money getting their coins slabbed. No matter what the census numbers are, the quantity of high grade unslabbed modern coins is in the jillions.

It is a waste of money to get that stuff slabbed. Most people know that.

If you want high grade modern slabbed coins buy them on the secondary market. Let somebody else pay the stabbing fees.

IMO the minimum should be $200 (about 10%).
And that's just the Economy level.
Rest in Peace

A lot of the slabbed modern coins are bulk graded - which is significantly cheaper than the OPs numbers.

And cheaper yet if the submitter takes the time to cull out coins that obviously won't make -69 or -70

I like the TPG because you know its not counterfeit and years down the road I think most people are going to want them graded.

it bothers me that some silver eagles get spots after they are graded.

Westernsky, that is terrible advice. If they buy the already slabbed modern coin, they will pay a ton of money for something essentially worthless. If you want an MS-69 to MS-70 Silver Eagle, find a perfect one and spend the $30 to send it in. Please do not spend $2,400 to buy an MS-70 first strike or whatever nonsense they are trying to sell now. Buy a Bust Dollar instead. You will have a totally different story to tell your kids in 20 years.

The ms-70, ms-69 silver eagle craze escapes me. The raw rolls and proofs I've seen look pretty much the same. That is unless someone has taken them out of the packaging and mishandled them.
