This one surprised me tonight.. was going through a bag of mercs I had set aside about 8 months ago before life got hectic, wasn't checking too close but somehow eyeballed this one and did a double take.

This would be my second D, so I'm fairly certain, but the 1 is definitely weak in these D's.

Also posted over asking for grade, but dont have my loop handy to take a picture so stuck with microscope pic(xelated)

Thanks guys!

Looks like it to me. I've only seen two in hand, but this looks the same.

Thats what I thought too, but I have found 2 now. I think these D's are much more likely to get overlooked compared to the other. What I am curious about is how many of these were minted, and what my odds were to find these 2.

for you!
@Shale - do you just buy bags of junk silver locally/online and Cherry Pick? I have been thinking about this to be something to try at a much later date after I get my to do list (long) done.

Yeah, buy mercs for silver, and cherry pick, stack the rest. Gotten everything but a 16d so far. (Edit: I dont have a 42/41 regular yet either)

Price has jumped in the year since I started, was 2.5+spot at first, now its like 4.50+ spot, so I havnt bought anything recently. $100 face bag, $1300, is about $1080 in silver stacking, so if I can value this coin at $220 at least, I did well. If I pulled xf's out of the bag (~ 30) and rarer coins (5 ~ $8 ea), would put me a little further ahead.

That being said, watch where you get the bags from, I had one that I requested replacement weight since the avg weight per coin was down significantly due to a fair number of slicks.

Great find! Just one correction; these are Not overdates, but are considered doubled dies. Overdates for U. S. coins ceased in 1909 when the U. S. Mint stopped punching the date into dies. In 1909 all dates were engraved into the master dies.
